Harriet Tubman was one Legendary Lady. Why wait to start teaching your children about her determination and bravery? The first of many in the Our Legendary Ladies series, this books encourages parents to go beyond the basics and teach their children about history's amazing Harriet Tubman. All the content has been approved by her leading historian, Kate Clifford Larson.
Where to start! I am a stay at home momma which wasn't always my plan. I worked in New York City at a big financial firm and had every intention of continuing my career once my little lady was born.
By God's good grace, I learned the valuable lesson that life is precious.
Almost two weeks over my due date, I was induced. It started out as a normal delivery, but the next thing I knew I was in the operating room where an amazing team of doctors were trying frantically to stop my hemorrhaging.
Over the next few hours I said every Bible verse I had ever memorized from my grade school days at Fox Valley Christian Academy in Neenah, Wisconsin. I prayed more than I have prayed in my life.
When I was finally brought into the ICU, I had the heart wrenching experience of hearing babies crying and watching them snuggle with their mothers. Heart wrenching because I was still not stable. I had yet to hold my baby girl. Seventeen hours after giving birth and I had not seen my daughter.
During those emotional hours I made the promise to never be away from my daughter, unless I had to. Laying in critical condition in the ICU as my daughter sat alone in the NICU, was the first time I felt the selflessness of a mother. All I could think about was how scared she must be in that little bed all by herself. In a new loud, scary bright world and her momma wasn't right there with her. I remember begging my husband to go and hold her and just touch her. This was the closest to death I had ever been and all I cared about was how she was doing.
So, what does this have to do with legendary ladies you ask?
One of the thoughts that crossed my mind while waiting to meet my baby girl was, if I never see my daughter again what will she grow up to be like? Will she grow up to be a strong, independent woman? Who will influence her?
My sister and I were talking a short while after my daughter was born about how there are no baby board books that tell children the amazing stories of our legendary ladies. That's when I made it my mission to try and find stories to read to my daughter about strong women.
And this, my friends, is where the idea came was born. We need to educate our children starting at the youngest age possible about the strong, influential, and hopeful women who made it possible for us to all be where we are now, whether it was through helping explorers navigate North America or curing diseases.
We are where we are because of these women. And I want every child to have these stories engraved on their hearts and know that they too hold the power to influence and change the world.
Because of my experience I have a new perspective on life, a beautiful daughter and son, and a brand new career. That is my story. And just like that of Our Legendary Ladies, no two stories are alike. I thank God every day that I am still here on this Earth and able to share these amazing women's stories with our little ones.
Trust me, it is never to early to go beyond the basics and teach our babies about history's Legendary Ladies.

Our Legendary Ladies Presents Harriet Tubman by Megan Callea and illustrated by Jennifer Howard is a masterpiece. The words and images present the courageous journey of Harriet Tubman. Written for the young listener it will be enjoyed by all. Every library and classroom should have a copy of this exemplary book. This picture book is a reminder that we can overcome.
The book has a simple vocabulary with beautiful images that shows the great woman that was Harriet Tubman. Teaching children what she did for the freedom of her people can be a great help to obtain great ideals and positive models in their own lives. It is a good option to acquire a taste for reading from an early age, whether English is native or the second language.

As parents of two well read children and grandparents of two inquisitive grandchildren, we were excited to find this series which promises to not only stimulate the senses through beautiful artwork, but also tell a story of women in history who made a difference in very beneficial, often selfless way.
The story was written by Megan Callea and beautifully illustrated by Jennifer Howard - truly a powerhouse duo.
Although written and illustrated for young children to understand and appreciate, the message goes far beyond... they teach young people that there are individuals in this world who surpass what is considered 'the norm'.
The Our Legendary Ladies Series of children's books will soon become popular to parents because they not only encourage their children to read but also teach them important events in our history.
We ended up purchasing three of these books. One will never be taken off the shelf (I want to have a pristine copy later on when these become very popular); one will be given to each of our two grandchildren.
We will certainly purchase the rest of the series as they become available.
Girl power forevermore! Your little is never too young to learn about strong women in history who changed the world. In “Our Legendary Lady Presents Harriet Tubman,” author Megan Callea uses narrative rhyme and accurate historical facts in a child-friendly way to tell the tale of Harriet Tubman, a freedom fighter and spy in the American Civil War. The cadence of the words composed paired with the illuminating illustrations by Jennifer Howard make for the perfect introduction to one of our leading ladies in history. Fierce, loving and driven, Harriet Tubman showcases unstoppable character and determination to make the world. A bit more kind-and that she did. I highly recommend this book for Children ages 1 to 5.
Like all good biographies for kids, this cute little board book tells the story in a way that's simple enough for little ones to understand, but it's not dumbed down. It's got lots of great details, despite being a book for kids. And I love that at the end it encourages little readers to follow Harriet's example and "make [their] mark upon the world." (The illustration shows a little girl reaching out to take Harriet's hand.)
Speaking of the illustrations, the best part is in the details, like lyrics to "Go Down, Moses (Let my people go)" subtly worked into the picture, or the tiny fireflies that accompany Harriet on her journeys through the dark. On one of the last pages, additional facts about Harriet's life float in the background - that she also fought for women's suffrage and made a special tea that helped soldiers recover from dysentery (who knew??) A great introduction to an amazing woman for even the littlest readers.
The story behind the making of this book (series - there will be more!) is fab, too. Our Legendary Ladies is the brainchild of Megan Callea, whose goal is to start kids reading as early as possible about the "strong, influential, and hopeful women who made it possible for us to all be where we are now." Last but not least, for every and for every book they sell, they donate one. Awesome.
As a Speech Therapist, some things I love about this book for emerging literacy skills:
1- Rhyming pattern promotes phonemic awareness skills 2- It’s packed with excellent vocabulary words 3- Simple enough storyline for the younger ones, yet great for asking wh- comprehension questions to more advanced kiddos 4- Illustrations are engaging and absolutely beautiful 5- Children can relate to the themes and feelings portrayed in the story (fear, sadness, excitement, etc) 6- Most importantly, it’s different! And such an important story
Though she be little, she be fierce, right? And she’s never too little to start learning about the fiercely brave ladies who paved the way for the freedom that we all enjoy now. The first in a new series of board books for the younger set, the mission of Our Legendary Ladies is to start children young learning about these amazing women! I love how they began the series with Harriet Tubman, someone who I sadly didn’t really learn about until the upper elementary school years. I found the rhyming text by Megan Callea to be the right pace for little ones (my 3 year old sat rapt throughout) and the illustrations by Jennifer Howard are perfect-there is almost a superglow patina that appears throughout that to me represents the strong light within Tubman. Part of me wishes I had had these when my older boys were toddlers but hey, it’s never too late to start! We read this one earlier this week over snacks & stories and it brought up questions about the Underground Railroad which led to pulling out US maps and tracing routes to talking about the courage of Tubman and what that means for us. My favorite line: “using the gifts she was given and doing her part, this legendary lady changed the world by following her heart”. YES. Thank you @ourlegendaryladies for allowing us to be a partner in your journey! For those interested in learning more about this new series, link in profile.
Our Legendary Ladies Presents Harriet Tubman by Megan Callea and illustrated by Jennifer Howard right from the start a glowing cover to a children's book about a legendary woman. Growing up in the 80s and learning nonsensical history from my teachers, I knew in my heart there were Black heroes. I didn't learn about "Harriet Tubman the Moses of Black Runway Slaves" until I discovered Public Enemy and I ventured into my past and asked that critical question, who am I?
In “Our Legendary Lady Presents Harriet Tubman,” author Megan Callea perfectly short story and awesomely illustrated by Jennifer Howard making the pages simple for children to grasp as you should allow them to talk about what they see in these pictures of this fierce spy risking life for freedom. As a father to a son who is part Black, Hispanic, and Asian (we live in China), and I am making sure he is getting all that can get from his Chinese roots, but how do I introduce his Black or Hispanic roots which I believe are essential? Harriet Tubman is perfect for lessons of courage and leaving a mark on the world no matter how you started out; this book should be used as an example of creating stories for children about our past and its heroes.
As a tester I had my student read Our Legendary Lady Presents Harriet Tubman and write a review. Thomas is an ESL student studying in Zhenjiang, and he is getting into learning more, and Harriet Tubman is new to him, but I wanted to get his thoughts.
Harriet Tubman - A Name in Freedom By Thomas 陈一凡 (ESL Student)
"In fact, Harriet Tubman is a savior.A savior is her job, but she is willing to do this. From her birth, life was hard, and she knew what she had to do, get free and help others.
When she grew up, Harriet Tubman found a chance and ran for freedom.I think she is fearless when she saw her liberty. Also, not only she ran for herself she ran for others taking them via underground railroad from America to Canada.
Finally, the government started to offer a reward for her, but they couldn't stop her. She fought until slavery was abolished, becoming her people's Moses.
It was easy for me to read because I am learning English and I like the art, but I think the book was too short."
I admire the spirit and mission behind Our Legendary Ladies Presents: Harriet Tubman, the first in a series of board books about important women in history written by Megan Callea and illustrated by Jennifer Howard. The duo’s goal is to create books that go beyond the basics of colors, numbers, and shapes, and introduce children aged 0-5 to women who shaped the world. Very admirable.
Harriet Tubman has spare, rhyming text. The story covers some major points in Tubman’s life—birth into slavery, decision to escape, journeys back into the south to free other enslaved people, and the fact that she fought against slavery until it was abolished. Challenging vocabulary is introduced in both the text—abolition, freedom, mission—and the illustrations—spy, suffrage, expedition. The illustrations are gorgeous and offer opportunity for deepening the discussion between parents and children.
Although this book is for small children, I would have liked to see more detail in the text. The story does not give the reader enough specifics about what made Tubman so extraordinary—the conditions of her enslavement, her near death injury as a child, her visions, her decision to leave behind her entire family when she first ran, her role as Union spy. Some of these details might be disturbing to young readers so the author has to tread carefully, but I think more specifics about Tubman could have been included in a reader-sensitive way. Or maybe include details in the back matter so that parents can learn more about Tubman and then choose how to explain her role in history to their children. Also, while I really like the idea of introducing complex vocabulary to small children, I’m not sure rhyming prose is the most effective way to do this. At times the rhymes felt forced. Those criticisms aside, I think this is an exciting new series that parents will enjoy.
Our Legendary Ladies series is a collection of books written by Megan Callea for very young children and tell the stories of famous women throughout history. The first book centres on Harriet Tubman, who campaigned for the abolition of slavery then later for women's rights.
I really enjoyed this book. Callea writes in rhyming couplets, making the story easy to follow but also quite engaging for children. The narrative flows really well and the rhyming isn't forced or trite. She also uses a mixture of small and larger, more complex words which helps children to develop their reading skills. A really nice touch is on the Our Legendary Ladies website there is a worksheet for Harriet Tubman and the themes present in the book. I thought this was an excellent idea as it allows children to engage with the topics presented and how to think critically.
The illustrations by Jennifer Howard are also stunning, as well as helping to tell Tubman's story and complementing Callea's writing. I found the images to be really evocative and memorable, which I think any good picture book should have.
Overall I think younger readers would really enjoy Harriet Tubman. It gives an insight into a remarkable woman while still being accessible to younger readers. A lot of research has obviously gone into the book which has paid off enormously. Coupled with Howard's illustrations, Callea has written a wonderful children's book.
This short picture book introduces the historical figure of Harriet Tubman to young readers. It's the story of a very brave American abolitionist and political activist. Born a slave in Maryland, she managed to escape in her late twenties, only to return in order to rescue her family. Gradually, she brought other relatives out of the state, and dozens of other slaves after that. Her nickname was "Moses," alluding to the prophet in the Book of Exodus. After the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was passed, she guided fugitives farther north into British North America. This is more of less the content of this picture book. More details about Harriet Tubman's life are only sketched through additional text at pages 21-22. Since the standard length for picture books is 32 pages, additional information may have been provided, in my opinion.
The rhyming text is very well written; I like the font. Beautiful pictures enhance the written words.
To parents and teachers: knowing Harriet Tubman's story in advance wouldn't hurt. Children will be prone to asking many questions, I'm sure. Appropriate for preschoolers and 1st graders.
Thank you Booktasters NonFiction for allowing me to read this book for free in exchange for an honest review!
“Our Legendary Ladies Presents Harriet Tubman” by Megan Callea is an important and beautifull illustrated children's book. Calleas ability to explain and tell Harriet Tubmans incredible history is amazing becauce the text in the book are so little but so præcise! Harriet Tubman was a special person, and Callea incorporate so fine in the history that all girls can have big dreams and fufill them. I have never read a children's book for so small children that is so relevant, good and shows a real woman and the big difference she did. I love the idea of writing about real women who did and does today a big difference to help many people in kontrast to Disney movies. “Our Legendary Ladies Presents Harriet Tubman” is filled with so many colerful and beautiful illustrations made by Jennifer Howard. I am a BIG Fan!

Even today, I remember a lot of the books I read as child, so knowing well how much a good book at a young age can mean, I am very happy that this book exists. This story by Megan Callea and beautifully illustrated by Jennifer Howard, about the wonderful lady that was Harriet Tubman is outstanding.
There is nothing better than a book aimed at children that an adult can also enjoy, and this is certainly one. Words and pictures in this book combine to present a wonderful message and to make an enoyable journey out of learning about Harriet Tubman, a woman who surpassed her time. I'm sure this book will encourage children to read and will teach them about important events in history without making them feel as if they're having it forced-fed to them as a task.
More good news is the fact that this is only one in a series! I certainly can't wait to read the rest. Highly recommend for both children and adults.

"Our Legendary Ladies" is a series of books that introduces famous females to young children. This includes facts with illustrations about each famous woman. The poetry keeps the attention of the young reader as well.
The first book in this series is about Harriet Tubman. Even though the book is a very simplified version of Harriet Tubman's life, the illustrations provide clues as to how and why her life was very significant in American history. The only issue I have with this book is that it did not explain why slavery was bad.
I recommend this book to readers between the ages of 3 to 6 years-old. I hope "Our Legendary Ladies" continues publishing books for children.
-Disclaimer: I won this book for free through Goodreads giveaways in exchange for an honest review.-
I liked the illustrations a lot in this book. The lighting/color scheme reminds me of fairy lighting. It is very soft on the eyes and interesting. The writing has some larger words for a kids book. It might be difficult for a child to understand it. I liked that it rhymed. That added a little flavor for such a well known historical event. And I enjoyed the inspirational tone the story has. Overall, I liked the illustrations, rhyme scheme, and the tone.
A good book to introduce little children to inspirational ladies of the past. Harriet Tubman was an American Hero who braved danger to help free slaves. I read this book to my 5 year old cousin and she loved it. I think this book should be in schools and library read along for kids instead of fairy tales, if we start telling kids about heroes of the past like this i believe it would broaden their minds to do great things in future.
Harriet Tubman by Megan Callea Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist and political activist. Author Megan Callea wonderfully brought about a piece of America’s history into a children’s book. The beautifully bright and colorful illustration would catch the wonderment of any child of any culture. What I like most about the book is that it is language development. A great way to introduce a piece of history to the very young.
This book is a short little board book written with the attention span of a young child in mind. It does have some more advanced wording in the book but I think that is good for developing a child's vocabulary. The illustrations are lovely too. It belongs in any home or library.
I love history and historical books and was glad to find something for younger readers. I found it by accident through Instagram and Twitter, and it was such a good find.
One of recommended books for young reader. The graceful illustration will be really attractive for the kids. The simple sentences used and the use of rhyme make the story beautiful even more. As the parents and children can harvest many moral values trough the story, the simple sentences might also be utilized to open a mini discussion.
This book has been added to my favourite books list. I highly recommend you read it. This books shows that slavery is wrong and what really happened and how slavery ended. Harriet Tubman was an amazing women, she saved hundreds of slaves from being worked to their deaths.
Such a nice read. I read it twice. Once by myself and the other to my daughter. Who asked me to read it again. I guess I'll read it tomorrow night to her before bedtime.
I loved the book. It was well written in rhyme style for young readers and more seasoned readers. The illustrations were on point, as they perfectly fit the rhymes. Not to mention, Harriet Tubman is an often overlooked leader and legend. She is a testament to courage and perseverance. I loved the book and highly recommend it!
I received a PDF copy of this book for an honest review. Having home schooled my children, I would have loved to have had a book like this. It is written in rhyme, which easily captivates children's attention and helps to put them at ease. When children are at ease they will engage more. Here, the door is open to have meaningful conversations especially regarding difficult topics. The illustrations portray the authors words in such a delightful way. For the very young children, you can ask them what they think is happening in the picture. I am looking forward to reading the next book Anandi Gopel Joshi!
This book is a very good book for introducing young children to Harriet Tubman. It is quick and uses verse to make the story enjoyable for young audiences.
Our Legendary Ladies Presents Harriet Tubman, was a poetic retelling of the bravery and heroic acts of well known American abolitionist Harriet Tubman. I applaud the author for her skill in presenting the popular historic story of the once enslaved Tubman in a way that kids would appreciate and understand. The illustrations corresponded well with the transitioning paragraphs and ultimately the message of bravery, staying true to one's belief and finding courage in spite of bleak circumstances was well received. This is a children's book I would definitely recommend!
Highly recommended book for children. The book has a simple vocabulary and a good illustration that is easy to get the attention of the children. This is a very inspirational and effective way to introduce a bibliography to a child. 😀
