Matthew Williams always wanted to get married. Then during his first year of being marriage he was struck down by depression, then after returning to work he suffered his second bout of depression. Matthew Williams is a brave man writing about his marriage break up, that is a hard thing to write about and for Matthew who also suffered depression. I know that with Matthew writing this book and his blog that it will inspire others to make positive changes in your lives. I to went through a divorce, its hard going when children are involved going to court for custody and to when access is involved for the parent. Even if you haven't been through a divorce or suffered depression this is a book that anyone to read.

Something Changed is a laid bare account of how bad and good things happen. The good, was getting married, the bad was the divorce. The funny bits were in the middle like dating and again the not so funny depression.

I thought the start of the book was a bit slow at the very start, but I laughed out loud on page 12. That would have been a great start to the book for me. The Chapter "I was robbed" - made you fall in love with the author and want to read more.

I have just passed the book on to a friend who is just divorced and I know that she will love it. It is a heartwarming read with a nice cup of tea. Well written and enjoyable.

Coming from a guy going through my own divorce, I couldn't find many male memoirs about the "he-motions" (as TD Jakes would call it) that a guy grieves through as he goes through the divorce stages. What I liked about Something Changed is the author is very open, vulnerable, and funny to boot. Well done, Mr. Williams.

Something Changed: Stumbling Through Divorce, Dating and Depression by Matthew Williams asks the following question based on his own life: In the aftermath of marriage breakdown how do we pick ourselves up and start again? This book navigates us through his journey of divorce, dating and self-discovery while battling depression.

It was the depression element of Something Changed that attracted me. It could be said that I have a slightly odd obsession with hearing other people’s stories of despair – only when they come out the other side, mind you! I guess it helps me feel at peace with my own story. And, like I said in the intro, this book helped me find a glimmer of hope in my situation, that I will feel somewhat “normal” again. I guess this is why Williams and people like him write these books, to help bring about a positive effect and, for me, it is proof that it works.

I called this a self-help book in the intro. I’m not sure if that was the intention but that was how it felt to me. It didn’t have enough details about Wiilliams’ life for me to consider it some kind of autobiography. Saying that, it wasn’t like the usual self-help books on the market. The advice he offers was not obvious, condescending or obnoxious. You feel like you are just reading the story of some man’s struggle until about 1/3 of the way through it dawns on you that he has some pretty smart things to saw, which are turning on lightbulbs in your brain. I especially liked Williams’ thoughts on the need to be perfect all the time.

I also really enjoyed the layout and writing style of Something Changed. Williams has a clear writing style and is quite witty. The chapters are short and nicely broken down and I liked the poems which were scattered throughout the pages.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I encourage picking up a copy if you are going through a hard time at the moment, or know someone who is. If just one sentence has a positive effect on you, believe me, it will be worthwhile.

I was sent this book in exchange for an honest review.

My Thoughts :
Matthew Williams take us on an honest and indepth journey on how depression and Mental Health can easily effect anyone, male or female at anytime and anywhere.
Relating to a lot of what Matthew warmly covers through experiencing it myself, Matthew breaks down different sections in this book to enable an easy honest read. Although it was a bit of a slow starter for me, I was soon gripped at his laid bare account of life and how he suffered The Black Dog.
Feeling empathy throughout, Matthew recounts his darkest days to some of his happiest days.
We are not alone in life weather its, depression, anxiety, breakdowns or life changes and as Matthew gives us this account of his life, we are filled with emotion and humour aswell as feeling the pain and emptiness of the dark days that were faced. Even if one person can relate to this book than that is one person who is helped and made to feel not so alone.

I was lucky enough to be part of a book tour and receive a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was so honest and tackles some incredibly important topics. I found it very difficult to put the book down, it was fast paced and funny at times and deeply moving at others. It's helped me find words to explain how I have felt going through depression in the past. I highly recommend this book!
