I've been binge reading fly fishing books this summer. This one was worth reading, but far from the best. The dated information on equipment is fun to read about from a historic/nostalgic point of view. The rest had a bit too much name dropping and and tales of fishing famous and expensive rivers for my taste. Not necessarily unexpected from the founder of Esquire and GQ, and not all bad, just far from the best of this genre.

Gingrich offers a lovely piece of reading for those enamored as he is (and, to be honest, I am) of "the quiet sport" - fly fishing. The technical information in the book is almost all passe now, some 50 years after its publication. but the poetry, philosophy, humor, and contemplation that accompany the pursuit of trout (or salmon, grilse, grayling, et alia) with thin rods, small reels, and tiny, utterly artificial flies pervades this lovely set of essays.
