If you decide to read this book because you are a fan of Dame May Whitty's work in the movies, you will be dissappointed. This book doesn't cover her film career at all. It's a good book, I suppose, for anyone interested in British theater history since it covers some influential people in 19th century theater. That's because Dame May married into a theater dynasty. The last part of the book is about the career of the author (Dame May's daughter), which I didn't bother to read. I wished, instead, that the author spent more pages on her mother.
I was ploughing through May Whityys theatrical career when I decided to look at the index and saw no mention of her films.I then read the review on this site and realised was wasting my time and stopped reading this turgid tome. How on earth can you write a biog without mentioning her role as Miss Froy in The Lady Vanishes.Ridiculous.
