Lynn M. Stone is the author and photographer of Rabbit Breeds. Stone is a naturalist, nature photographer, and writer whose photos have appeared in such magazines as National Wildlife, Ranger Rick, National Geographic, Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, Natural History, Audubon, and Smithsonian.
Considering Stone’s other work, I didn’t have high hopes for Deer. I picked up the book imagining references to the “fun” of shooting deer, with maybe a venison recipe thrown in for good measure.
However, I was pleased to see that in this book at least, Stone keeps the exploitation talk at bay and concentrates on a simple but factual description of deer and their behaviors and habitats.
Any mention of hunting waits until the end of the book, in the section headed “Deer and People”:
Deer are game animals. They are hunted with gun or bow and arrow certain times each year.
And that’s it. No references to venison steaks or how nice deer heads look mounted on the wall. Ok, Lynn, I’ll have to hand you this one. Not too bad.
