This book is an interesting, well done study about the modernization of two fascinating countries.

It’s divided into three sections: the past, the transitional period, and the current era.

Each of these parts is split into smaller, more specific aspects, which are consistent across all three sections. This makes it easy to follow and see the progress that happened since the mid-19th century.

However, as informative as this work is, there’s one caveat: The Modernization of Japan and Russia was published in 1975.

As much as I enjoyed the research presented here, I’m also fortunate I’ve studied both countries’ more recent histories, so I'm aware of many of the more recent facts in each category. They’ve progressed immensely between 1975 and now - perhaps most notably with the collapse of the Soviet Union.

This book was handed to me on its way to eventual library donation, and though I’m glad I read it (I did learn a lot!), there’s still plenty of supplementary info missing as a result of its publication date.
