Modern quilting meets traditional thanks to FreeSpirit designers. Tula Pink, Amy Butler, Kaffe Fassett, Anna Maria Horner, Denyse Schmidt, Kathy Doughty, and more, rose to the occasion when presented with the challenge to put a modern spin on classic blocks. You won't believe what they made! With 40 inspiring quilt blocks from 20 designers working in their own fabrics, this mix-and-match block collection comes with 5 sampler-quilt projects. Sew patchwork, appliqué, and paper-pieced blocks
All blocks are 12 inches. Designs are creative, original and fun. The templates for the paper pieced blocks are good. For the pieced blocks plan to make at least one or more beta test blocks. The directions are terrible.
I wanted to like this more than I did. I enjoy FreeSpirit fabrics quite a bit and have used them before, so I expected to be more interested by this. I found most of the blocks to be oddly complicated, which when matched with the bold/vibrant fabrics made for a muddy presentation. There wasn't enough contrast for me to really see the piecing, and considering how much went into the piecing, I feel like that should be something we would want to see. I liked the different layouts toward the end, but I personally wasn't a big fan of the blocks overall.
For: quilters who want to try sampler blocks that will take time.
While the individual blocks were interesting, what I liked best were the quilts made with the diverse blocks. 5 quilts with very eyecatching and creative sets were completed. Then ANOTHER favorite part was a gallery of pictures of all the contributing quilters/designers with a brief biography. I love Philip Jacobs fabrics and admire all the work that goes into designing them, so I was tickled to see what he looks like!
