Bodice Rippers

Rate this book
Angela Knight writing as Anastasia Day

Like the bodice-ripping romances of the 1980's, these stories feature handsome, dominant heroes, but the heroines are as intelligent and strong-willed as they are lovely, and submission ends at the bedroom door.

In Anastasia Day's Bodice Rippers, three lovely women meet the Prince Charming they've been searching for ñ only to discover his idea of "happily ever after" includes handcuffs and riding crops.

The first story, "Bondage, Beauty and the Beast," is definitely not the Disney version as the Beast teaches his Beauty erotic submission.

In "A Question of Pleasure," a Union captain discovers his lover is a Confederate spy and sets out to discover just what secrets she's revealed - even if he must use sensuous persuasion to make her talk.

Finally, a pretty mercenary becomes "The Bloodslave" when she finds herself a prisoner of war to three kinky vampires who consider her virginity an irresistible temptation.

Made up of three novellas, this book is well written and very arousing. Two of the novellas are set in the distant past, one in the future, but all contain sheer eroticism and tight writing.

The book opens with the novella, Bondage, Beauty and the Beast. Brianne is naked and helpless with her hands bound before her. She is on a country lane somewhere with her head under a velvet hood. Her husband has died and to make sure that Brianne can't get her share of the inheritance, her stepson is selling her as a slave. When her hood is removed so that the buyer can check the quality of her face, she meets the Beast and faints.

They complete the transaction and she soon finds herself scrubbing the floors, adorned only in the chains that press sensitively against her body. He shows her compassion in the beginning, but after a failed escape attempt, she must submit fully to being his slave. There is a reason why castles have dungeons and the Beast puts his to very good use.

The next novella, A Question of Pleasure, concerns Rose Carson, Spy for the Confederacy during the Civil War. While spying for the south, she has been sleeping with Major Alan McReynolds of the Union Army. She has fallen deeply in love with him, as he has with her, but he also suspects that she is a spy. She wanders into his trap and he decides to take matters firmly in hand to urge her to confess.

The final novella is set in the distant future and is titled The Bloodslave. In the year 2459 A.D. a band of mercenary vampires wage a battle against the T'tcha Ker. The mercenary vampires, who also happen to be telepathic, are winning the battle. They are in a mop up style operation as they come under fire from a sniper. As they work closer to the sniper who is running out of ammunition, they realize that the sniper is human and even better, a woman.

They capture her and quickly discover that she is also a virgin. As if she ever really had a choice, she is forced to satisfy their longings, as they have not seen a woman in a very, very long time. But, as the novella unfolds, one has to wonder who really is the prisoner?

These three novellas make up a pretty good book. My personal favorite was the first novella, but the entire book is well written and arousing. Whips, paddles, various devices, candle wax, and a few other favorite things make up just part of this book. If you are into bondage and such, this is definitely one to add to the collection.

BODDICE RIPPERS, BY ANASTASIA DAY

I'm not sure that's the actual cover for this book. It was the only result I had when I searched for it on Google, though.

I feel a bit self-conscious reviewing this... The book consists of three erotic short stories about BDSM. But then, I did read it, and I said I would review it, so I'll do my best. I'll try to keep it short.

I bought this on a whim. It was on sale for less than $0.50, and according to the teaser, it was erotica with an interesting story and engaging characters, unusual (fantasy, historical fiction and sci-fi) settings, filled with strong women and a light touch of bondage. I would sue them for false advertising if the book hadn't been so cheap.

Synopsis: Bondage, the Beauty and the Beast is an erotic retelling of the fairy tale. A Question of Pleasure is about a beautiful Confederate spy being erotically tortured by her betrayed fiance, who is a Union major (set in the American Civil War, obviously). The Bloodslave tells the story of a human girl lost in an alien world and capture by three vampire pirates.

Overall enjoyment: Meh. As good as a sex scene may be, I'm always a bit freaked out by lack of consent, which means that the first two stories were a turn-off for me. And honestly, the sex scenes were a bit crappy... I would have expected something about BDSM to be a little more imaginative. It's just the exact same fuck, over and over again.

Plot: I'm not sure if that was a big concern while writing these... I was a bit worried at how she seemed to relish the idea of rape as punishment. And how she loves to generalize, with actual lines like "all women secretly hunger to be dominated" and "it's not just me, all men feel pleasure on inflicting pain".

Characters: They're all as poorly developed as possible. This feels exactly like a porn movie: a few introductory lines, and suddenly everybody is fucking.

World/setting: Ditto the last category.

Writing style: It was all about "throbbing shafts", "moist petals", "liquid pleasure" and "puckered orifices". And everybody purrs all the time.

Representation & political correctness: I think I'll just skip this part...

Fanfiction has spoiled me for professional smut.
