A good introduction to the subject and having just read an article by Peter Wright in an early 70's copy of the Journal of the Lancashire Dialect Society, l looked forward to reading this.
Having read a fair bit on dialect and word usage some of this was a little 'old' to me - I could also quibble with a couple of his definitions of some word meanings, but as I failed to write any notes while reading, I'll have to leave it at that. However it is worth noting that words can not only change in their meanings over time, but also from place to place. So, despite my few criticisms, this is still a great place to start should the usage and meanings of words in the work[place and everyday use - as used by us 'commoners' - be of interest to you. It is a subject I find infinitely fascinating and only wish I'd tripped over the subject decades ago!
