On The Streets of Edinburgh is a first novel by 12 year-old Leah Hearne. I was privileged to have been told it was available through Lulu. Leah is the granddaughter of my cousin, David who is an author in his own right. Not knowing what I was getting ready to read, I ordered the book and I have no regrets doing it. It is an exceptional book made even more so by her age. As I read, I kept reminding myself that the author was only twelve. It is so complex, one would think only an accomplished author could write it. Her use of language is awesome. As she describes what is going on, you can easily imagine yourself right there with the main character. You can feel the cold air and slip on the ice along with the characters. The feeling of danger and suspense is described so well that you feel it as you read. The characters are so well thought out and written so that they come out of the book and join you. Leah definitely keeps you on your toes and thinking as you read.
“Things lie in there that are probably best left undiscovered.” Said Mr. Elwood as he talked to Esther Alwen about the forest at the edge of Edinburgh. He was trying his best to discourage her from going into the forest. However, Esther just wanted to get some wood for her Father to use in making mirrors. She thought she would slip in and out with no one being the wiser. How foolish was her thinking! Something evil is loose in the woods and now it is after her.
Esther’s story gets entwined with those of her new friends, Irene, Oscar, Eric, and Carlota; fairy tales with real goblins; Esther’s first visit to the castle; her sister, Mary’s love for Lawrence, the guard; and true magic. What is causing the characters in books to come out of them and attack the people of Edinburgh?
As you try to figure out the solutions, you first have to decipher the various clue paths. They get pretty tangled. You have to keep reminding yourself that a 12-year-old wrote this! It is an amazing book with a surprise ending.
