What if YOU inherited a haunted house and a camera that could see the past? The passing of Nicki's best friend left behind many unanswered questions, not to mention a crumbling New Hampshire farmhouse, but Nicki had no idea just how deep Taryn's secrets ran... Isolated in the spooky, old house that appears to be haunted, when Nicki discovers a hidden journal, she finds herself in the middle of a frightening story that will make her reevaluate everything she thought she knew about her friend. In a book told between three time periods, Nicki will attempt to unravel the mysteries that followed Taryn as she worked her final job at the abandoned boarding school in Eastern Kentucky. Was something supernatural terrorizing Taryn there? Did Taryn learn too much about the enigmatic institution’s history? Is her spirit now trying to communicate with Nicki? Most of all, did something dark and sinister kill Taryn–and is Nicki next? One thing is for sure, Nicki is not alone in the haunted house she now owns.
I enjoyed this book and felt it addressed some of the issues left unanswered in Sarah's House which had left me a bit disappointed as it looked like being the last chapter but now I'm hoping there may even be another one ( or more ) !
I originally gave this book four stars, because I've been afraid that I've been exhibiting "star inflation." It's a good book, and one that I'd recommend to other readers. I've been dithering for some time over whether I should only save 5 stars for really spectacular books, such as some of those by Louise Erdrich, Ken Follett or Steven King. However, I subscribe to four e book newsletters and lately I've been limiting my purchases of books with 4 stars or less, just to lessen the overload. I've heard of people whose eyes are bigger than my stomach, but I never thought someone (especially a fast reader like me).
But I myself would want to read this book. So, last night, after I gave the book four stars, I made the decision not only to change my rating of this book, but in the future to give books rating as to whether I would recommend these books to other people. Obviously, this is one of those books.
This is the sort of horror or haunted house book I like: no gore, no vampire, werewolves or zombies. Just well-written prose that builds up from subtle hints of something frightening which builds up in a way - well, I hesitate to write the words I'd really like to, because they'd been taken in a way I'd rather not hint at. Just let me say that the tension builds, it gets pretty scary and then it is sort of resolved. The finish is not only a good "closing," but it is also beautiful, tender and - well, let's just leave it at that.
I've put others of this series on my wish list for future purchases. Done said, that's enuf.
Really enjoyed reading this, especially because I thought Taryn was gone forever! But I love the way the stories all come together in the book and when going back in time I felt like I was there. I was able to guess most of the ending, but it didn't take away from the story at all. Great book, now I have to re-read all the other books so I don't have such an overwhelming book hangover.
So, the grammatical errors and spelling errors were just all over this story, and if you are going to the length of putting your stories out to read, why not do at least some editing? The story was okay, but really Taryn dying should have been the end, in my opinion. Stretching it like this is just kind of ridiculous, and really, where did Taryn ever show up haunting the house? Oh well, on to another.
I absolutely love Rebecca Patrick-Howard's writing!! She really created an great character with Taryn! I could re-read and re-read the Taryn's Camera series! It is a great combination of ghosts, love of the past and wonderful characters you can connect with!! Read this series!!
Really liked this book. This is the last in a series .that I really liked. The book went back to 1965 and 2014 and present day. If you have read the series, you will want to read this one.
I was looking for something different than you standard "crime drama". I found it with this book. Couldn't put it down. Loved the photos at the beginning of the chapters. I am now a fan of Rebecca Patrick-Howard.
I missed the Taryn's Camera stories. Those books left me wanting more and so I was pleasantly surprised there was a story created from Taryn's photos and notebook. I know her story has ended but this one was as good as the other ones.
Love, love love the series! Relatable characters that u fall in love with. Fast-paced & descriptive writing pulls u right into the story. Would love to give 5 stars but, again, the grammatical errors & typos are horrendous. PLEASE invest in a good proofreader. This writer deserves to have her work enjoyed without the unnecessary distractions of missing & misspelled words on every page.
