'You're a trendsetter and always ahead of the curve. You're so much fun and deserve every bit of the success you've achieved!' - Deepika Padukone 'Malini is the fashion and scoop police of Bollyland...she never "miss"es a beat. Good luck with the book!' - Karan Johar 'Over the years, I've seen Malini grow from being a blogger to being a brand, as she and her team continue to carve a niche for themselves in the entertainment and lifestyle space! Look forward to it love.' - Kangana Ranaut 'MissMalini is someone who brought about digital journalism. Her social media presence is huge. Close your eyes and imagine the one thing you'd want to do for the rest of your life and find a way to make THAT your career. Malini Agarwal's story began much like any Bollywood movie from the nineties - with a pigeon, a damsel in distress and Mumbai, the city of dreams. She realized soon enough that she was destined to be someone extraordinary. The clapboard sounded with the launch of a hobby blog by this dancer, RJ and columnist who went on to become the founder of the biggest entertainment website of its kind. Brand MissMalini took the world by storm before the era of blogging and entertainment journalism, and much before Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat dominated public consciousness. The rest is history.MissMalini is entertainment's #BossLady. #ToTheMoon is her mantra and her story. In this dazzling book, full of wisdom and wit, she tells you how to get to the top and stay there.
When Vishnu told me that he got his hands on "To the Moon: How I Blogged My Way to Bollywood" by Malini Agarwal, I could not contain my excitement. I messaged him to give the copy to me.
Malini Agrawal aka miss Malini is one of the top Blogger in India and a role model to many aspiring Bloggers. I also have a Fashion blog (http://edgeofashion.blogspot.com/) so this book was kind of like must read for me.
"To The Moon" is an autobiography of Miss Malini. She has written about her life before the blog and after it. She has talked about people she encountered during her journey to the top, it also covers about how she build a brand. And finally notes from her friends including many celebrities.
Now the most awaited question "Is this book helpful!?" The answer is well both yes and no in terms of what you're asking.
Yes, if you're asking is this book helpful for inspiration and just the way of life than my answer is yes. The notes and all the #MMProTip is awesome.
No, if you're asking about blogging. I don't think so that this book has something that I already did not know about blogging. Yes if you don't know anything about blogging at all then this might help you.
So lastly if you're someone who knows miss Malini and are inspired by her then you should definitely read this book otherwise you might get bored.
Just finished this self-help memoir. Wait. What? Yes, it's the memoir of Malini Agarwal - the star bollywood blogger and the woman behind the brand Miss Malini. She introduces you to her Mumbai and tells you about her story - her accent, her life and her journey to become the most successful blogger of the country in the entertainment industry. She has dedicated an entire chapter to help you blog your way to the moon (Miss Malini, is there space for us? ). She has put forward all the lessons she learned while doing this. There are number of messages and passages that have been written by important people in her lives, her friends, the investors, the celebs, the people from the Miss Malini team and that was quite refreshing. Oh! Did I tell you how she stayed true to her blogger self and wrote the entire books as blogs? That was awesome. Overall, it's a really nice read and I believe anybody who has ever thought how this Malini Agarwal became THE MISS MALINI would love to pick this and flip through the pages of To The Moon by Malini Agarwal.
I really wanted to know malini's honest and raw story in this memoir. Instead, this audiobook sounded more like a 7 hour audioresume than a memoir. Why would half a memoir be filled with quotes from other people, even if they are famous? The whole book reads like a back cover - famous people saying nice things about Malini after she narrates very normal interactions she had with those famous people. All that said, maybe I am not the target audience of the book and millions of her fans on Twitter bought it. But publishers should realize by now, followers does not always translate to buyers of books! I am judging Harper Collins now for giving a two book deal to her which she mentions in the book and wants people to submit ideas on Twitter to her 🙈 ! hearing the term 'hashtag' a gazillion time in an audiobook tests your patience. Someone tell her that we read books to get away from social media. Ok the rant is over.
To be very honest, I bought this book thinking it will be my complete blogging guideline, from 0 to hero! What I missed was the fact that this might be part autobiography part her experiences of blogger life and not just an A-Z guideline of how to blog and emerge as a blogger in the current world.
It does include a modern technology inspired world's A-Z but that to me that acted as just adding info about different brands and their history and facts (which I did enjoy learning). However, I expected more, or maybe the content of a different direction.
If you know Malini Agarwal and admire her so much so that you wanna read about her life and how she got where she is now, this is the book for you. Also, if you want to read about how blogging felt in an era of no WhatsApp, Facebook - basically zero social media era, then read this book, it will take you on a fun ride of the times when bloggers were not admired by marketers as in the current age. On the contrary, if you are looking for a complete blogging guide and want to start and build a blog, then, this might not be enough for you (it will give you some key points but not all). To get points in this book you need to know the basics of blogging.
Now that I have read the book, I noticed that the majority of her readers, unlike me, were her fans or people who knew her way before the book published. I picked this book thinking as a blogger 101 guide which it was not.
All in all, a good, light read. it took me more than a month to finish as I lost interest in the middle. But overall it humorous and well written.
I was very excited to read #tothemoon as she is a super successful blogger and after reading her autobiography I came to know that she had donned other hats as well like that of RJ and VJ
However, I tried very hard to like the book unfortunately it didn't catch my fancy. It is hard to pin point what I didn't like but there were too many distractions in the book. Testimonials were highly irritating so were her tweets.
One enthusiastic girl + Lots of Dreams + City of Dreams + Social Media ‘A’ game = Miss Malini !
Currently every millennial out there wants to be what she is. She is one #BossLady and #tothemoon is her mantra.
Like it or not, whether in India or internationally, you cannot miss Bollywood, and synonymous to Bollywood is Miss Malini…. And that’s what makes this book so surprisingly wonderful. Surprise, because there is more to her than just Bollywood.
Malini Agarwal is the founder of MissMalini.com, India’s favourite Bollywood, celebrity gossip, fashion trends and beauty tips website. More than that, MissMalini is a brand to reckon with.
In this autobiographical narrative with 42 blogs, Malini Agarwal has successfully described how she blogged her way to Bollywood, and not stopping at only that, but to every digital space and screen. The book is a delightful read. Divided into 4 sections, Malini has described her journey to Mumbai, her foray into Radio, her career trajectory, and finally, how to build a brand.
Now here is what I absolutely adored: Malini speaks to you. Her writing is personal, more like sitting over a cup of coffee and chatting. Her writing is enthusiastic, like her personality, you can feel the pure #love and #energy that comes forth. She describes her childhood, her journey to Mumbai and how she did it all. Her struggles, her success and her stories are shown in a light, humours manner but depict the dedication and passion that she possesses. If I have one take away from here, it is this – Passion for what you do is utmost. Money, fame and success will follow if you are passionate enough to follow your dream. That dream could be anything…. and going by some of the new career choices that millennials are coming up with, it could be literally anything …. #icandothat and #whynot?
Filled with anecdotes, Bollywood stories and #MMProTips, which are incredibly interesting and profound, there are some serious life skills here. Simple, funny and yet thoughtful. The extraordinary people who have helped Malini in her journey have written to her, advising her on her future endeavours and these messages are beautifully meshed into her narrative.
The ‘How to build a brand’ section is a wonderful read and has some brilliant management mantras. She describes how to find what you are passionate about using Japanese techniques. Now isn’t that very corporate? Her personal insights and professional tips are a must read. The trivia on the various digital platforms is an eyeopener and whether you are a millennial, gen Y, or any other alphabet, you can learn, read and grow.. because if there is one thing that I have learnt, it is that age is just a number and you are never old to learn.
This book is on my top 10 2018 lists to read for Management Tips, Career Advice and general fun tips on how to blog, network, socialise and live your dreams.
I picked up this book with an expectation to learn how to build a successful personal brand from a blog (that’s what the title said). I already run a blog with around a 20K visits every month. The idea to pick this one was to take it a notch higher, not technically but learning softer aspects. However, all my expectations were shot down with the first few chapters of the book. However, I still dragged it to finish.
The first half of the book is everything but the blog. The author makes sure that she doesn’t miss any person in her life to be mentioned in the book. She praises them and they praise her (in short excerpts plugged in between the book). The only good part in the first half is that the author is genuinely in her genre while writing and needless to say that it sounds as if she is talking to you with elements of wit and humor in bits and pieces. You enjoy reading it but you don’t learn much apart from ‘n’ number of new names. This part is less about business and the blog, so at least it should be inspiring. Unfortunately, it is not as the story is far away from Rags to Riches. The author background is IFS and she being educated in a top notch school along with wandering the world at a tender age just disconnects you from her life as it sounds like a life of probably less than 1% in the country. A whole stretch in this part just mentions where was she (IFS Brat) and her husband (UN Not-So-Brat as she call it) in early years. Another super stretched part is the pages which just have random names and what the author likes about them. But the author is honest – She clearly states that if the reader wants, he/she may choose to skip this part. May be she raises that this is not of much use for the reader.
Let’s come to the second half, the second of the book starts on a promising note where she starts talking about how she transformed from an RJ to a blogger to an entertainment company. But this part is very short-lived. You really need to read in between lines, draw your own references to extract some learning out of it. It is very evident that the author is not very comfortable writing this half of the book as she is not someone who is about business. Whenever she tries to get into technical or business part, it sounds very superficial. Every now and then there are ‘Google Search’ references in this part which is not why you bought the book. The book ends into an author wish list (primarily around Bollywood) and short notes of praises from celebrities who are all praises about her.
There few typos as well where one page the love frequency is stated as 538 Hz and 528 Hz in the very next page.
Overall, do not pick this up if you think it will help you learn a new skill on how to flourish a blog. Consider only if you are interested in the author’s life.
Malini’s book, To the Moon: How I blogged my way to Bollywood is a real eye opener spurning creative splash narrating her blogging journey, tapping into the lives of celebrities that the commoners can watch from a distance and won’t be wrong to say that Miss M has made them more human to our eyes!
The book is the real deal from brand Malini narrating the Bombay days-the city which makes us dream big to B-town, candid tale of screw ups in a radio interview with bluff master Abhishek Bachchan, juicy stories, lay out in dotted boxes encapsulating testimonies, quirky MM Pro Tips, IFS Brat vs UN Not so Brat as an anti dote to the war of sexes with husband Nowshad, blog entries and advice to bloggers, the radio stalker, Bandra Bada$$es, digi entrepreneur and Pay Forward, something everyone should try making the book our own desi secret to tread the path of success. #TotheMoon is not just a book but the secret recipe, alluring as it gets and glamour ritual blended with spooling the purpose for life.
What makes blogging click? Is it money or the pure love for writing? One thing which irks me when people pester me on whether I can run my kitchen with it or make the moolah for a life time and asking how much they can earn if they jump on the bandwagon. It irritates me to no end being a journalist and blogger for whom nothing matters more than the content. Being a maven that altered the destiny of movies and celeb blogging, Miss M comes with the perfect answer for all bloggers’ intent to make a killing by penning online.
“People often ask me how to become a rich and famous blogger and I have a simple answer: Don’t start by wanting to be a rich-and-famous anything. Step back, close your eyes and imagine the one thing you’d want to do for the rest of your life even if nobody paid you to do it. Find a way to make your career, and fame and fortune will surely follow. And, hey you’ll enjoy the ride no matter what, right! The passionate pursuit of happiness, THAT’s what it’s all about. If they ask you, tell them Miss Malini told you so and off to the moon you go!”
Yo! Attagirl! I bet nobody can ever teach you the way Miss M does even if blogging was taught in colleges to earn a diploma or degree. I don’t call it a book nor a rehearsed account but every drop taken into the tiny ocean feels like an extraordinary and adventurous trip. There are somethings, the splashy moments that takes me back to one incident or the other in life. If a name like Malini can screw things up so can we! Nothing can be kosher be it relationships or work. The screw up with Abhishek Bachchan during a radio interview...full panic mode, being in love and blogs he reads! Ahem! Ahem! I screwed majorly during my first journalist and editing days. Trust me, it haunted me during the nights that I couldn’t sleep at all. I love ya Malini! The midnight or 4 am boyfriend anecdote and her mom’s answer is the real killer. Read it!
Of course, Malini has had a radio stalker and would be bizarre if she never had one but her down-to-earth and mushy narration made the anecdote-no matter how much scary-sound like a terrific scene stealing reel from a movie. She is an ultimate rockstar. Or, flirting with danger during one of her Dad’s assignment in Beirut and still feel the pang flitting page 103.
To the moon is a journey of Miss Malini in the world of blogging. The book is divided into three parts. Her journey, her childhood, her work and blogging tips. It has some wonderful chapters from life in Bombay to her years as a Radio Jockey. To the movies that inspire her to stars coming at her show. It is also about the A B C D of blogging.
Well, I was so much excited to read this book as it was all about blogging. I was a little excited when I read Blurb of this book. First of all, I loved the title of the book. #Tothe Moon is an appealing title. The book has many many things to learn if you’re willing to. There are some tips by Miss Malini called #MMprotips which are very helpful, funny and interactive. Out of so many chapters, I loved chapter 4 Blogging. It’s about A B C D of blogging. From Appealing content to hiring Content writers, It has each and everything. One can get a lot of motivation from this book and some tricks of blogging.
Well, on the other hand, I felt the book was little dragged, her personal experience was so much elaborated that at a time it was boring to read. Also there’s a section where a perssonallity tells about Miss Malini’s journey. The Pace of the story is slow. The narration of the story is good. It’s a first-person narration. The tempo of the story is good as you’ll see variations. There’s funny, love, mystery and tragic moments happened in her life that she describes beautifully. It’s about her journey, how she started a blog, her struggles and most importantly her dedication and decision to follow her Passion is described amazingly. #Icandothat #BossLady are some bits of chapters that I loved. Though the book is slow paced but the style of writing is engaging. The simple language makes this book more interesting. She has explained each and every platform, blogging tricks beautifully.
Overall it’s full of motivation, inspiration, and tips for the blogging world. What I learned from this book is, To never give up on your dreams, on your Passion. Follow them, Do what makes you happy.
Afterall, as I always say. Passion Rules Us All, Always 🙂
There are 3 things happening in this book: 1. A blog/origin story, 2. Praise (of the author, by the author, by the authors’ friends of the author and of other people), 3. Brand advice. I really liked 1 and think that parts of 3 is a bit dated. Let me explain. 1. I love yappers and parts of this book is just a fun little blog which reads like a podcast? Just yapping! 3. I found some of the brand advice a bit dated. It’s obviously not the book’s fault, but the techno-utopia was a bit much at this current moment in time. I don’t know if the book format is helping in this case.
The first half of the book narrates Malini’s personal life from childhood, when she was taken to different countries by her parents (As her parents worked with Indian Foreign service) to the famous blogger of the 2000s. The second half is a treat to bloggers and social media nerds. Malini has given ample of tips and tricks on blogging as well as marketing the blogs.
makes for an interesting read because Malini has had a dream run. I was particularly fascinated by her and Nowshad's stories as diplobrats. However, I would have loved it had Malini continued in the autobiographical tone rather than donning then hat of a management guru. Don't get me wrong, her tips were great but reading about her journey is more fun than knowing how anyone else can get there- if you know what I mean.
Malini Agarwal, famously known as ‘Miss Malini’ is a popular Blogger, Digital Influencer and an Entrepreneur. She has captained her business venture, ‘MissMalini.com’; sailed it through roaring waves and anchored it securely. The book is an autobiography of Malini Agarwal. It is about how she climbed her way up the Bollywood ladder. The book entails her life pre-and-post the creation of her blog.
The book is written in an innovative way. There are testimonials by her friends, family, and celebrities. Tweets by Malini also line the text of the book. The scoreboard between her husband and her was rather interesting to read. The writing is simple and hence, the easy readability.
Anything in excess is a bad story. What works for the book, ironically goes against it. After a point, one gets bored of the tweets and the testimonials as they become too predictable. Testimonials are meant to testify about a person or a story-at-hand but here the story runs in-between the testimonials.
Malini Agarwal’s blogs, tweets and testimonials sum up this book. One can read these on social media too. You do not need to buy a book for that. The book is superficial as it lacks depth.
I wanted to read about her journey, her struggles, her battles, her losses and her victories. Rather this appeared to be a ‘Thanksgiving book’. Disappointed!
Miss Malini has been on my radar for quite some time. But it was absolutely wonderful to see and read her story from her rookie days to what and who she is today. I love how she showed her gratitude to everyone who helped her along the way although I feel some could have been avoided as it just felt like I was reading thank you notes at one point of the book. A good travel read.
Finally finished after 31/2 months!! Started following her after buying the book.. kudos to her work ethic, vision & mission for her brand!! I admire how far she has come and that’s what got me interested to know her story and be inspired! But just as she says herself, she gets easily distracted and that was the theme of the book.
Apart from the first part which reads like the longest thank you speech to her friends and mentors, it was very distracting.. within each blog, there are writes ups from celebs, friends & team (smack in the middle), then the train of thought continues from where it left of! As a reader, it was very off putting and instead of being a book I couldn’t put down, it turned into a book I couldn’t pick up!!
'#ToTheMoon: How I Blogged My Way to Bollywood' by celebrity blogger @maliniagarwal aka Miss Malini, tells the story of her journey in entertainment journalism. In the book, she narrates her journey and how she took blogging and entertainment journalism to a new pinnacle. She also mentions some of the interesting incidents of her life like when she first moved to Mumbai nearly two decades ago with her two suitcases, one contact (friend), and lived in an apartment with six girls and a pigeon, and the rent was just Rs. 625. At the end of each chapter in the book, MissMalini provides tips. There is also a section titled. The A-Z of Digital Entrepreneurship from WordPress to Facebook, from Twitter to Instagram, from hashtags to emoji, on how to make one’s presence felt on the Internet. What started off as a hobby, soon developed into a flourishing business, and today she is recognized as one of the pioneers in creating a digital brand. And it is this journey that she details in her book. The book is also a guide for people who want to enter the world of social media and use it effectively, a world that Malini, a self-confessed ‘social media Jedi’ has successfully achieved.
