Margaret Morgan brings together a range of techniques and projects which illustrate how the use of design, colour and gold can enrich calligraphy. The earliest manuscripts were often embellished with richly coloured miniature paintings, exquisite flora borders, decorated capitals and gold leaf. The same ideas can be used to enhance a range of calligraphic projects and gifts.
Illumination and Decoration for Calligraphy is a practical guide. Lavishly illustrated throughout, it introduces you to the materials and techniques of decoration as well as suggesting a host of practical applications for the craft. Once you have mastered lettering, illumination and gilding skills are ready to create your own designs. [From the jacket.]
For such a slim book, this contains some really good material! A brief but interesting history on illuminated manuscripts is included. Along with instructions for five projects, five alphabets are featured; I particularly liked the "Things to Avoid" tips when forming letters. Note that the book Color Decoration and Illumination in Calligraphy is a reprint edition with identical content.
