This is the story of Deacon Antonius Pius Crete, First Deacon of The Enlightened Technocratic Order of The Empire, and why he died. This story is the self-told account of his descent into the labyrinth within strange ruins of a foreign culture. His enemies, The Mags, are a magical society at direct opposition to The Empire, and through his unlikely partnership, and strange transformations, Crete uncovers the fundamental and impossible realities of the true relationship between The Empire and The Mags. The Empire are those men and women who unexpectedly traveled to this strange planet via the mighty warships of Earth. They dominated their home system, and when they found themselves stranded in a foreign part of space, assumed they could do as they pleased with the planet they had found. It did not take long for them to realize that this planet was already inhabited. The Mags, or The Magicians, were already living there. This is a people who have somehow come to embrace the strange energy of this planet, and use it to alter reality itself to conjure tools, transmute objects, and even fly. When The Empire came to their world, they were more than ready to fight . . . When an ancient enemy of The Mags awakens in the deserts of Empire controlled territory, the lines are not so clearly drawn anymore. At each point in this story the reader is encouraged to What is a dream? What is real? Where do the limits of our free will end? This story has its fill of space battles, magical monsters, and curious technology on a world that is a strangely accurate copy of our own home planet. In a true battle between sorcery and technology, who will win?
