This was a totally charming, original take on star crossed lovers, demi gods, actual gods, and paranormal creatures. It also deals with elemental magic, but you find out the true origins of River/Constatina's powers through flashbacks.
I did have several questions through out the book that I thought could have been answered with a scene with a conversation between Alexon and River, but perhaps Alexon just doesn't have that information and it's revealed later in the series.
Overall, this was an enchanting read

What a delightful tale of two star-crossed lovers struggling to find their happy ending despite meddling gods and across the span of centuries. River, descended from the gods, lives in another realm, guarded along with her equally powerful siblings by a series of keepers. Her supernatural abilities allow her to reform into water, as well as use it as a weapon. But when a betrayal occurs, she’s thrust into a human world she doesn’t know and must run from the men trying to capture her and her powers.
I found Alexin/Allessandro to be one of the most intriguing characters. The backstory between him and River, told across the dual timelines, was quite well done, and I liked the dynamic of keeper/betrayer/savior. Will definitely be looking forward to more in this series!

This book contains a spirited tale of love, gods, paranormal creatures and magic.
The storyline covered a whole range of topics, always giving the reader something to consider, and the mixture of different ideas / realities gave the book depth. The writing was good with the descriptions of the main characters bringing them to life – especially the central female character, who has both a fierce and vulnerable side.
If a fan of strong woman romancing a rugged man (with a good heart), mixed with strong mystical themes this book is definitely worth a look.
Word count around sixty thousand and reading time approximately four hours.

Tidalwave was a wild ride through a layered reality. Elemental gods, everyday humans, demons and demigods mix and mingle in this book. Parallel lives and realities give the book depth.
The main character, River, is a powerful woman with both a soft side and a fierce one. I love a strong, female main character. Her love interest is similarly rough and rugged with a softer core. People who like a romance with a rugged man will like the character and the hunky appearance of Alessandro. The character’s physical descriptions paint a very clear picture that I could easily see.
There were some places in this complex tale that left me with some confusion and the writing and editing could be tightened up but this is an imaginative story that will appeal to the reader who likes romantic fantasy especially if you like ancient myths.

Personification engages and enchants in "Tidalwave"
Even though they say ever new story is a riff on an old one, something about "Tidalwave" is utterly fresh, with Poseidon giving his daughter another chance to live in the mortal world. While the first handful of chapters delight with the style of writing found in the best fairy tales utilizing personification to engage and enchant, the novel shifts with memories that read like past life regressions as River becomes aware of the danger she's in and doesn't know if she can trust Alexon, who feigns being chosen by the forest's overseers to be her and her siblings' guardian. To tell a tale from the first person perspective of an element--water--is a tricky task, but Overman pulls it off with aplomb, giving us just enough backstory as everything unfolds in a measured amount that keeps us wanting more.

From the moment I read the first chapter, I fell in love with this book. Overman's novel tells the story of River, a young, naive water element whose life is turn upside down when a rugged, handsome mortal arrives in her beloved forest. I have the privilege of owning a copy. There is excitement, thrill and love. A book worth every penny.

What I liked about this book is that it brought together mythological elements that I haven't seen put together in this way before. The main character is a living water element. This created all sorts of fun situations--she could turn into a puddle, splashing down out of frustration, fear, anger, embarrassment etc. which made it a great device to show character emotion. Other aspects of the water embodiment made for interesting problems, like what happens to her clothes? How does gravity affect her when she becomes water? You'll have to read the book to learn more. The other mythological elements in this book included ancient gods and saying more would be a spoiler so I'll stop there.
The story itself is a love story and an adventure that includes some good action scenes. It kept my interest because I found that I cared about the characters and what was going to happen to them.
The story did have a few problems for me. First, the opening section required a lot of patience because the main character seemed far too clueless to be an ancient being. Why, only now, is she asking questions about the humans when she's had humans around all this time? When she's on earth, why does she know words like 'upholstery' and what a TV remote is when she doesn't know what video cameras do? How does she know 'Finding Nemo', when even the humans aren't familiar with the film? These inconsistencies all too frequently pulled me out of the story, which was unfortunate because much of it I really did enjoy.

This is a very difficult book to review. I'm frustrated at how good it almost is. I think with some serious thought and rewriting this has the potential to compete with the best fantasy books out there.
The concept is utterly original and the characterization of the primary roles is well done though lesser characters could do with a little more flesh to them.
I felt the story was best viewed as a young adult fantasy and yet, the story is set in two dimensions and two time-frames that would likely confuse a younger reader.
I struggled to read When It Rains but then, I'm not a young adult. Aspects of the story gripped me yet other parts lost me entirely. There is no doubt in my mind this author is going to be a big success and this work is a good, early step in that direction.
