(Excellent book, although in my opinion Schmidt somewhat exaggerates the break between Phenomenology of Perception and the Visible and the Invisible. To the end, and almost despite himself at times, Merleau-Ponty was a phenomenologist. He was too smart and intellectually honest to think he could simply jettison subjectivity by power of will or philosophical fiat.)

260511: anything on or by m-p will interest me: this one very interesting in contrasting tacit cogito and phenomenological focus on consciousness, with a more sociological understanding of, and through, being amongst other beings. inspiring, even-handed, exploration of m-p re. sartre, de saussure, structuralism in general. recognition of problems heritage from descartes. ambiguity, new terms, heidegger, various possibilities m-p was investigating at the time of his death- what might he have come up with, alas...
