We had to read this at school: not as great literature but as an example of what was meant by melodrama. It was a perfect lesson. This is the stage equivalent of the 'penny dreadful' - like a parody of a 19th Century murder mystery, but without the jokes. It was ahead of its time in that the the villain was unmasked by the most obvious of tricks, but one that has been repeated again and again since.
