Though i graduated from his high school, i had no knowledge of his poetry and his fame in the late 1800's. He gave readings and lectures throughout New England and the upper Midwest. There is a wonderful statue of him in Father Ryan Park, Mobile, AL. I visited it several years ago and shared with some men sitting under shade trees who Fr. Ryan was and the fact that he had been pastor of a church not far from the park.

I was most moved by Father Ryan's poems about death, loss, and the faith. I found many of the other poems to be trite and uninteresting, but I'm not a very astute critic, so others may find them interesting.
