Postgraduate students who are at the beginning of their research projects need to read this book. The book encounters some issues with the research process, from planning to reporting. It covers numerous aspects beyond the technical ones, such as ethics, administration, supervision, data/literature handling, reporting, and pursuing careers after the study ends.

The editor understands that research projects are hardly reduced into specific approaches. Therefore, some research methods in social sciences/ humanities and medical/ natural sciences are presented but with moderated details. This book is a starter for those who want to obtain an overview of preparing and executing research projects.

Note: This is an "old" book written in 2002. Some information about working with computer and doing research database may be obsolete.

A book full of the blindingly obvious - to those who have already completed some research!

This book contains everything that a postgraduate has learned about research methods by the time that they have finished their research and wish they'd known in the first place! That is why I would advise you to read it before you start your research and keep it as a useful reference throughout. The chapters are easy to understand and cover everything from how to plan the research, gather and organise data, process modelling and simulation, presentation of results and how to look for suitable career moves following the successful completion of the postgraduate degree.

There is even a chapter on tips an hint in using MS Excel. This can save the researcher hours of fiddling around to get the spreadsheet to behave properly and produce the desired results.

The second version includes chapters on using the web to find additional data for the study and advice on how to write for ease of understanding.
If you are about to embark on some postgraduate research and you don't read this book right now, in four years' time, you'll wish that you had!
