Estudió en Granada, donde fue miembro de la tertulia de «La Cuerda». En Madrid llevó una vida bohemia que no interrumpió cuando sus narraciones alcanzaron un éxito muy superior a sus intrínsecas cualidades literarias, llegando a constituirse en el autor más representativo de la novela por entregas o folletín, con frecuencia novela histórica degenerada en novela de aventuras poco respetuosas con el detalle ambiental. Eso le llenó de una característica vanidad y soberbia que fue criticada por sus envidiosos contemporáneos, que contaron sobre ello innumerables anécdotas. Murió en la mayor pobreza, a causa de su dilapidador estilo de vida, aunque su entierro, revistió gran solemnidad: todas las Academias estaban representadas, como asimismo todos los teatros, siendo numerosísima la asistencia de autores, escritores y periodistas.
