William Swan Plumer (July 26, 1802 – October 22, 1880) was an American clergyman, theologian and author who was recognized as an intellectual leader of the Presbyterian Church in the 1800s.
I don't know how a man so theologically sound and astute could produce a commentary of such little worth. There is hardly an original line in the whole volume: It is one massive 650 page catena of comments and observations by every Tom, Dick, and Harry who ever remarked even casually about Romans. I love everything I have read by Plumer, but had I read this book first, I would never have consulted with him again. It is that bad. He constantly interacts with scholars from various backgrounds, conservative and liberal, while somehow never clearly articulating where he comes down on a passage's meaning. The end result is exactly what a commentary should NEVER do: undermine the perspicuity of Scripture. I you want a good commentary on Romans, read Haldane.
