Contentious issues such as abortion and the death penalty touch on people's deeply held personal and political beliefs. But these issues have also been tested many times in the courts. Often these court decisions reflect societal climate and offer a fascinating way to trace changing trends. This anthology series captures the passion and depth of these debates and provides an ideal resource for research on social issues. Each volume focuses on a specific issue and examines how the courts have helped to shape that issue through their rulings. Primary sources include the text of court rulings and dissenting opinions as well as contemporaneous analysis and opinion on the rulings. Secondary sources provide retrospective evaluation of the courts' decisions and their legacies. This engaging series offers a wealth of information on both the historical and contemporary aspects of the most pressing issues confronting society. Included
This book entitled Racial Discrimination is a nonfiction book. The theme that is shown throughout is that racism is bad. This is shown by how its showing everything that has happened in the past that had to do with major discrimination towards race. This theme also is showing readers that what we have done is not morally ok and that we need to let this not happen ever again. This is a major lesson because in the states we were very racist towards a lot of races. This is teaching readers the facts behind what people have done that was so racist and what the fixing of racism. The main idea of this book is how racism is bad. This is shown in many ways, like in facts that are included in the book from Racism in schools and all the supreme court cases that went with it and then all the way to how it was on the train and busses. It showed us what was happening to people and the significance of each idea. My favorite part of the book is the section of the school that was segregated. This translated a lot to today because we don't see that as often but yes it still happens with the “good side of town” and the “bad side of town”. There isn't as good of opportunities for some people just because of where they are located in a city. And that's just like back in the day when there was black schools and white schools. Though this book was very boring it still had a great message that went with it. Every chapter you learned something new and interesting that helped you understand how bad us as humans were when racism was in America. It is very hard to disagree with the author of this book. He states true nonfiction facts that shows how bad racism is, and even today I understand how bad racism is around the world, in ways that aren't in our own country. The emotions I felt while reading this book was almost like an anger. I felt the anger for those that were being mistreated and I also felt disgusted at those who did this to them. All in all, I would not recommend this book unless you have a passion for learning and reading nonfiction. It was very boring to read all though it did have some interesting parts to it. Therefore I would only recommend this book to a select few.
