Frank Bonham (February 25, 1914 – 1988) was an author of Westerns and young adult novels. Bonham wrote 48 novels, as well as TV scripts. Bonham was born in Los Angeles. He was a UCLA graduate. Bonham was known for his works for young adults written in the 1960s, with tough, realistic urban settings, including The Nitty Gritty and Durango Street, as well as for his westerns. Several of his works have been published posthumously, many of which were drawn from his pulp magazine stories, originally published between 1941 and 1952. Durango Street was an ALA Notable Book.
Tom Logan is framed for murdering two Yaqui soldiers and stealing $10,000 worth of Mexican gold. He has some suspicions about who the real culprits are and has two weeks to find out if he's right and give the Indians back their gold or he loses his life.
The plot was pretty good and intricate enough. The villains were conniving and Logan was a decent hero. He's a bit of a hothead (as Western heroes usually are) but he's not racist and genuinely wants to make his little corner of the world a better place. Sadly, the novel's prose was so workaday that it almost drained the story of its thrills.
Frank Bonham was one of the many juvenile authors I read as a child, and one that I still enjoy re-reading today. This adult western was very enjoyable! Recommended to those who enjoy a good ol' western.
