Jock Quayle, a lawyer, is surprised when his old friend Tim Wright asks him to start divorce proceedings against his wife, the young and lovely Patti. Jock is even more surprised when his own wife, Sylvia, becomes convinced beautiful Patti is actually Anne-Marie, a girl whom she first met at the convent school they both attended. The kindhearted Sylvia was sorry for the younger girl because she was very plain and unpopular and always getting into trouble, due to her habit of telling well meaning lies which often had disastrous consequences. She did he best to make up to her for her sad life. After Anne-Marie’s parents separated, she lived with the Quayles for a time, but then disappeared, and Sylvia has always worried about what happened to her. Jock can’t believe that the gorgeous Patti could ever have been the very unattractive Anne-Marie, and Patti herself denies it. But could Sylvia be right? As the story unfolds we learn more about the troubled past of these characters. This is a very strange but absorbing story, with some interesting though not always likeable characters(the nuns comes best out of it). It is not certain until quite near the end what the truth is, nor is there any certainty about what the future holds for any of them.
