Keith Harper is the author of The Quality of Mercy: Southern Baptists and Social Christianity, 1890−1920 and editor of American Denominational History: Perspectives on the Past, Prospects for the Future.
This book is simply a guide to the Southern Baptist Convention: what it is, how it started, and what its processes entail. The label "reference" is indeed appropriate, and I think the reader will discover the ease with which they can what they are looking for in all things SBC.
SBC FAQs is a useful resource for occasional SBC inquiries. It is not a sit-down read intended to be read cover to cover. Nevertheless, it does fulfill its purpose as a ready reference for many general SBC-related questions.
Enjoyed this more than I thought! An in depth but accessible explanation of the Southern Baptist Convention and its units. Though the FAQ and numerical sections were dry at points, I enjoyed reading back through the BFM 2000 and Report of the Great Commission Resurgence Task Force.
In terms of fulfilling its goal, the book succeeds. It ably answers common questions and then gives a view into the organizing documents of SBC life. An enjoyable read? No. But worth picking up if you are an SBC leader, messenger, or very interested church member.
