The story of the Hinckley, Minnesota forest fire shows the impact of the catastrophe on victims, survivors, rescuers, and policy makers. Sheds light on the reasons why such tragedies happened all too frequently in the United States of the Gilded Age and helps us to understand the origins of the Minnesota conservation movement.
Cabin Read #5: This is the best book I’ve ever read about the Minnesota forest fires of 1894 (aka The Hinkley Forest Fire.) Based on first-hand accounts, diaries and newspaper articles, Mr. Larsen gives a minute-by-minute account of the disaster. A bit gruesome if your squeamish, but a very good account of one of our state’s worst disasters. What added to my enjoyment of the read, was reading it near the area affected by the fires.
