i have mixed feelings about this book, and like with the last story i reviewed, i'm not sure if i'm just not in the mindset for a chill, slice of life, ain't no drama for yo mama kinda story, or if this story really was just. not. all that.... great?
the beginning seemed repetitive asf to me. you have the MC and uke, kakiuchi, who is a lover of cute things, and works for an IT/engineering firm. he's the kinda person who is like, "i'm all about peace and love, none of that drama BS, i just wanna live my life with no enemies". drama that way, he goes the other way. he hates conflicts in the work place because it makes him feel uneasy and it ruins the atmosphere between his colleagues. but at the same time, he has this desire to resolve said conflict by talking to the very people (more like PERSON) responsible, and comforting those that were affected.
then you have the seme, nihongi (i read it as "nipongi" at first, but anyways nihongi sounds cool imo i was like shit, i like that) who doesn't give a fuck about people's "feelings". if he wanna do something, he'll do it. if you suck, he'll gladly tell you in front of 50 other people, who cares if you feel embarrassed, you're fault - shoulda thought of that before you packed on 100 lbs of makeup like who are you kidding? things people typically think in their head, "i really wanna say this, but... because i have a conscious and i want to maintain peace with the people around me, imma keep my mouth shut." ya know, that lil thing called a "filter" where we divide in our mind what to say and what not to say? such filter doesn't exist for nihongi. he says whatever he wants and pisses a lot of people off, ruining the peaceful atmosphere every single time.
so the beginning is basically: nihongi pisses someone off, kakiuchi lectures him to stfu, nihongi is like yeah whatever, does the same shit, more lecturing, rinse and repeat. i was so done at this point, and i just got started! towards the middle it gets so much better when kakiuchi realizes his feelings for the guy and after a certain misunderstanding, nihongi reveals his love for cats but doesn't have any luck with them, and so kakiuchi invites him over to his place to "train" with his own cat so he can become a cat person without scaring them away.
there were certain parts in this book that i actually laughed out loud, bc it was hilarious and it i wished it was like this from the very beginning. the book is divided into two parts, the 1st part being what i just described plus eventual love confession and sexy time, and the 2nd part after they officially became a couple, so more sexy time. 2nd part.... was okay. nothing special imo. the highlight of the book was in the 1st part, around the middle when the CP became closer, started hanging out outside of the workplace, and nihongi trying to get kakiuchi's cat to trust him so he can pet it. in the very end after the author's note, there's an "extra story" in nihongi's pov, but the story in general is in kakiuchi's pov.
the illustrations by miike are soooo frickin cute. regardless, i'm having a hard time rating this between a 2 or 3 out of 5, but i'm going to stick with 2/5 because honestly, it was just "ok" to me. not sure how it got any higher than a 3 on amazon.jp by other reviewers, but to each their own. also, kakiuchi's fascination with cute things were totes okay with me, but it was just odd to me how he likes going to lingerie bars to check out the "cute" lingerie being worn by the girls, even though he's not attracted to the body but the clothes. yet he doesn't secretly collect the lingerie to look at later in private, but just likes going to these bars to stare at the cute outfits.... i felt that whole bit was unnecessary unless the author was going to go further with it (she didn't) like he has this type of fetish and his partner must wear it because that's how he gets turned on...
though it would be weird to implement that on someone like nihongi. unless kakiuchi is the one wearing it :')
anyways, worth reading? eh..... do you like cats? want to laugh for a bit? have nothing else better to do? then go for it. otherwise, there's plenty of other (better) books out there to read IMHO.
art is frickin cute though, so hey. til the next time ~
