In one event only 'can religion in America threaten the peace Of society, and that is, if any ecclesiastical organization shall attempt to gain political control, and to wield the machinery Of legislation in the interest of a church. But on the first Sign of such an attempt being serious, the American people will deal with it in the most decisive manner. They will never submit to ecclesiastical rule.
