Released on the occasion of the Metropolitan Museum's Centennial celebration in 1972, this publication salutes scholarly investigation in the area of Islamic Art. It is based on the full range of objects in the Museum's Islamic collection, and on pieces that provide important clues to solving art historical mysteries. The book is a collaborative effort of international character. Seven of the contributors were or are members of the Museum staff, but the majority have come from other institutions in the United States and Canada, or from various countries in Europe and the Near East. The publication is filled with essays by these various scholars, including great Islamicists Oleg Grabar and Lisa Golombek, accompanied by an introduction to the Museum's holdings and history of collecting Islamic art by editor Richard Ettinghausen. The book is divided according to medium of the works discussed: painting, pottery, glass, metal (including jewelry and armor), wood, stone, carpets, and combined media, with a special section dedicated to the artistic presence of Islam in Europe.
