"It's Snowing in Hawaii," by author Mike Guardia was written in a lighthearted tone suited for young and malleable minds of wonder. The Hawaiian people demonstrated their adaptability during an unexpected climate change with weather conditions unlike they've ever experienced. Even though it doesn't ever snow in Hawaii, they made the most fun out of it. From adjusting their sporting activities to their attire, there were accommodations formed based on quick thinking. You can feel the people's energies through the author's writing and the illustrator's art. Happiness and smiles are contagious even I caught myself smiling as I read this book. Everyone looked as if the weather changes didn't affect their moods because they were even more pleased with enjoying it.
What stood out to me the most was some of the characters still had on their usual clothing, while others converted animal fur into their hula skirts. The creativity showed within the pages of this book gave me a newfound understanding of Hawaii. Snow isn't something that happens to the island, which would lead to the question of how it will disappear after they're all done. Either way, I enjoyed reading this book, especially viewing the illustrations as they captured the emotions of the Hawaiians having fun with the snow. Who knows, maybe that might become their reality one day. Until then, I highly recommend this book for both parents and teachers to read to children because I know they would like to hear about it too.
This is a fun little children’s book about it snowing in Hawaii, something I don’t think has ever happened. The kids get their very first snow day off from school and are out busy playing in it!
The Good: This books is well drawn with beautiful, bright, colorful pictures. It’s written well for a kid to understand.
The Bad: Now the statement about this book says it’s in Rhyme. If it was I didn’t notice it, so it was a very low key rhyme, not like Dr. Seuss rhyme. Also in the story it talks about things that I don’t think exist in Hawaii, why would anybody own a Snowmobile or a bobsled in Hawaii? And in one of the pictures it shows a native person wearing Eskimo type clothing… Just can’t think too hard about this one.
And it of course has DRM, so I have to subtract a point for that.
This is a delightful whimsical tale of – snow in Hawaii. A state known for its tropical sunny paradise suddenly covered with snow and ice. What would happen?
The author takes us, through lyrical verse, on a magical trip around the Honolulu, Hawaii area. He artfully interweaves verses about typical Honolulu highlights, adding an interesting twist. Rather than sun and sand we have snow and ice.
What are we to do? Adapt to the new reality and make the most of it. The author creatively takes the splendor of paradise and covers it with the novelty of snow and ice. Mixing snow and sun in Hawaii make for a lot of fun.
Children will love the rhyme and the fanciful story. Adults will marvel at the creativity and imagination.
The graphics are AMAZING! This book makes me miss Hawaii. I could identify with everything except the snow because it is a tropical environment. A lot of places mentioned in the book I've been. I find it hard to believe it snows in Hawaii but I know it's completely possible.
