4 stars because it exceeded my expectations so much.

I found this book at a thrift shop and got excited because I love HeeHaw, and I always liked Lulu on it. I knew almost nothing else about her going in- I’m young enough that I was only introduced to HeeHaw through reruns watched at my grandparents house, so I was pretty clueless.

My excitement dropped a bit when I saw it was published by an independent Christian publisher, and had a “compliments of frontline ministries” stamp on the first page. I’ve found most books with those marks aren’t exactly upper echelon.

So, listen, it goes where you’d expect with that, and it does have some dated ideas on things- something about smoking weed once dooming you to shooting speed down the road, that sort of thing, but they’re briefer than expected, and not terribly unreasonable things to say under the circumstances.

Putting that aside, the book was a simple, straightforward, fast paced, interesting read. Heartbreaking childhood that Lulu paints in a pretty kind light. Surprisingly wild years that followed were entertaining to read about. And of course, salvation.

I saw when I was looking for this title on Goodreads that she wrote another autobiography in 2018, and I’ll pick that up soon. I’m invested in Lulu now and want to see how things went for her after this era.

I always liked seeing LuLu on Hee Haw, but never knew the struggles that she had growing up. It was great to read that she changed her life for the best. Would love to find more books from her to read.

It was a pretty good book. I liked hearing about her upbringing at the children's home, her life as a hippie and there was a pretty brief mention of her Hee Haw career. I thought too much of the book was dedicated to stories of her childhood - I kept wanting it to move forward but I suppose that was a really large part of her life and building of her character so I suppose it makes sense she wrote so much about this part of her life.

Overall, I good and easy read.
