About the author

Luigi Capuana was an Italian author and journalist and one of the most important members of the Verist movement. He was a contemporary of Giovanni Verga, both having been born in the province of Catania within a year of each other. He was also one of the first authors influenced by the works of Émile Zola, French author and creator of Naturalism.

L'emigrazione e lo scontro generazionale che ne consegue (e, in parte, la determina), rappresentano gli elementi portanti di questo romanzo. Partenze che segnano lo spezzarsi di tanti legami, che, in altri casi, concedono prosperità anche a chi è rimasto, che mutano la mentalità grazie al confronto con realtà culturalmente assai diverse. Un mondo in perpetuo fermento e cambiamento. Il lento tramonto di un epoca che sembra aver fatto il proprio tempo e che sopravvive solo nel perpetuarsi dei valori famigliari o patrii (ma sembra più una concessione e di Capuana che non un qualcosa di sentito e condiviso). Molto buona la prima parte. Meno la seconda: frettolosa e poco approfondita.

عن الهجرة إلى الجنة الأرضية أو أرض الفرص أو أي مسمى آخر لإمبراطورية الإرهاب والشر الجاثمة على صدورنا منذ قرنٍ من الزمان. رواية عادية، من شاهد فيلم Once Upon a Time in America أو أي فيلم مشابه -عن هجرة الإيطاليين وحياتهم في نيويورك والخ- يمكنه التنبؤ بالأحداث. قبل فترة قررت الامتناع عن قراءة أو مشاهدة الأعمال التي تنحصر أحداثها خلال فترة الحرب الأوروبية الثانية، يبدو بأن القرار سيشمل الأعمال التي تتحدث عن الهجرة إلى الشمال.
