An excellent idea hindered by a Procrustean format.
A clear, simple, brief historical survey of British drama 1956-1980, by perhaps its most pre-eminent scholar and practitioner, gives way to minimal accounts of 25 different plays from the same period, representative of the 25 different playwrights.
The first half is useful though taxonomic; the second half is uneven, unconnected, unsatisfying. The operant word is "short."
