Love, love, love. The Tales from the Special Branch series has kept me hooked for over a 1000 pages now, and I'm will not be stopping anytime soon. I have fallen into a dangerous cycle of reading the chapters; eagerly wait for the next chapter to be published, then forcing myself to wait a week to read it, so that the wait for the chapter after that won't be as brutal. The book is not done quite yet, in fact, the next chapter is set to be posted on March 25. It's only a few days, but I need it now.
I didn't think I would love the original characters as much as I do, especially Jake and Althea. The story is so complex and it smashes all the stereotypes surrounding fanfiction. In fact, it has diverged so much from the original Harry Potter books that I wouldn't even really call it HP fanfiction. The characters are completely different - from Harry Potter himself to Blaise Zabini and Pansy Parkinson, characters barely mentioned three or four times in the actual novels. I can't speak highly enough of the plot. It paints an honest picture of what life after the war would have been like (in my opinion), and discusses things about the Wizarding World that JK Rowling has not. The villains are a mystery, and I'm sure all the little bits and pieces we've been given will connect at the end, which I am extremely excited for. It is a beautifully written novel.
If you are still apprehensive about fanfiction: Ignore all the romance and the relationship drama. Focus on the huge amount of planning that must have gone into writing this story. Imagine the creativity of the author to have created something so intense and the dedication to have written something as long and amazing as this for no money. I am in awe of this author and so many other authors who do similar things.
Watching how the characters grow, their relationships, and the incredible complexity of the story has been wonderful. I look forward to the reading the next chapter of this book, and (if you're reading this, dear author), don't you dare kill any of them.

PS: the story is highly (highly) inappropriate, so I would suggest not reading this if you are faint of heart.
