Sheriff Eli Roberts has had more hardship in his life than one man should ever have. Now he’s started a new town, a new life, and as of this morning, new problems. A stranger has walked into town and fallen dead in the middle of the main street. Once again the wild west has earned its name. As if zombies in town weren’t enough, the Sheriff also has to deal with an ornery Doctor, a saloon girl, and a corrupt Mayor. To make it even worse, they’ll have to work together if they want to make it through the night. For fans of The Walking Dead, similar shows and/or books. Be sure to pick up the rest of the stories in The Zombie Wild
Westerns traditionally have a historical element that transcends the genre. Zombies usually inhabit the byways of post-apocalyptic fiction. The former is set in the past, and the latter generally in the future. Hence the mash-up of zombie/western is as uncommon as a gorgeous duck-billed platypus attempting to fly.
Death Walks In by Eric Baker is the first book in the Zombie Wild West series and as such, it is a literary oddity that although it is not completely unique as a western, I still find worthy of celebration. Eli Roberts is the sheriff of the town of Dire, and there has been an accident at the mine that has caused some of the survivors to walk into town, diseased. As the survivors make their way to Dire, they begin to bite the town-folk.
The sheriff, the town doctor, a saloon girl, and the mayor must jointly figure out what happened and how to mitigate the situation. Although the story is a zombie narrative, it is surprisingly light on the gore. The author is a Christian writer (he communicates it in the postlude,) so some of the adult themes are treated more like a cozy mystery.
That's not to say that there is NO gore. It just means that whenever there is carnage, there is a deliberate look away. It still works. Not a perfect story, but fun for a horror fan, fun if you like westerns, and double fun if you like both.
While an undocumented fantasy, it could have been true.
An excellent storyline and well fleshed out characters. It was a good, clean, and somewhat wholesome read. You don’t need, profanity, sex, and gore to tell a story. I loved the Christian influences in the writing. I would read again.
The details in this are amazing! I love the fact that there was no naughty stuff! This is how a great western book is supposed to be written! I loved the storyline and plot and the pacing was spot on. My favorite character would have to be Daisy. Her sarcastic drawls remind me of the way I speak sometimes. I'm definitely going to recommend this to my friends!
I dont like zombies. I dont watch the walking dead. Not my thing. I do like Westerns. I am SO happy I picked up this book. The action was quick and the characters and story felt plausible. I WISH the Author would make this a series?!?!
