The book started slow in my opinion but this is only because the first half seems to focus more on her experiences being the new girl.
The mystery that happens in the book is sprinkled in but the focusing doesn't feel on it until we get to about page 80 or so.
Around this point something major happens that I really wish they didn't do because it feels like it was for shock value.
They kill off a puppy that Courtney's baby brother had been wanting to get for the entire book.
It's very heart breaking and the puppy dies in a terrible way.
This however is an "Oh shoot something is seriously wrong with whoevers up to no good." even if the main character tries to tell herself that Lucky didn't get murdered.
It is a way to make people hate the bad guys for sure though.
This is something that I wasn't expecting and that I personally don't like to read in books.
I don't think it sours the whole book however and makes it a bad read it's a good book.
That one star was for Lucky though.
One of the things they did that I loved however was how they handled the popular girl in the book.
Courtney hates the popular girl. One of the reasons being she dated Josh another being she didn't send an invitation to her party to everyone.
Our mc confronts her by saying "Is everyone invited?" to which Jessica agrees. Everyone can come and she doesn't want to exclude people.
For some reason however Courtney thinks she's not and that Jessica hate's her because of miscommunication I guess? Her blind jealously? Who knows.
Courtney has the perfect plan to crash the party with a fortune teller costume.
She is mistaken for the hired fortune teller. I loved this fact because it makes Courtney realize one of the odd jobs her mother does is actually pretty fun.
Though her mother does have issues with getting a job that feeds the family I still think this was a good way to have Courtney relate to her mother. They don't talk it out but I still thought that was cool.
Back to what happens at the party. Josh recongizes her!
They have a mini fight because Josh realizes Courtney is jealous of Jessica.
He confronts her and then another big thing interrupts the fight.
This being she forgot to pick up her brother!
Chaos ensues but the subverting of the popular girl trope happens later.
Jessica confronts Courtney about being the fortune teller and that she wont get money for it.
Courtney admits her reasoning to which Jessica says "What do you mean? I invited everyone."
Our main characters reasoning for hating this normal female character is proven wrong!
I loved that part.
Rest in peace Lucky though hated that part. I almost cried.
