Lincolnshire was for more than a millennium the second largest county in England. The Romans brought civilisation and developed and fortified the towns such as Lincoln. The Saxons established settlements and cleared forests for farming, to be replaced by the Vikings and then the Normans. 166 color and b/w illus.
As a resident of Lincolnshire, I found this book fascinating. There was so much I didn’t know about how the county has developed, including the draining of land, the rise and fall of various towns and cities. I did feel that the book sort of petered out at the end, but overall thoroughly enjoyed it.
