The Last Essays of Elia

Excerpt from The Last Essays of Elia

I was astonished at the indistinction of everything. Where had stood the great gates? What bounded the court-yard? Whereabout did the out-houses com mence? A few bricks only lay as representatives of that which was so stately and so spacious.

Death does not Shrink up his human victim at this rate. The burnt ashes of a man weigh more in their proportion.

The book cover I have is different since my book is 123 years old. I thought Lamb's ideas and views were interesting. Life was quite different in the 1800's than it is now. I read the book in one sitting and loved Lamb's style.
