The stories in this book take place near the beginning of time, and were inspired by traditional stories of Coyote, the trickster. While there are trickster stories from around the world, Coyote is one of the most predominant in characters North American Aboriginal trickster tales. The ten short stories included in this book are didactic in nature. Although the stories build on each other, they can be enjoyed individually. The stories are fun and often outrageous, making them ideal for readers 8 to 12. Although the author is not of Aboriginal decent, he has studied and followed Coyote throughout his life. As an American publication, the term “Indian” is used rather than “Aboriginal” or “First Nations,” which are more common in Canadian communities. Despite these potential shortcomings, this collection of stories is engaging and full of mischief.
