Нет смысла судить и рассуждать. Гонкуровская премия за 1917 год в очередной раз досталась писателю-фронтовику, и неважно — насколько это оправданно, если годом ранее был отмечен званием лауреата Анри Барбюс, более прочих искавший справедливости, не воспринимая необходимость войн для человечества. Положение приводило к необходимости раздуть «Огонь» до «Пламени в кулаке». А о чём именно будет повествовать Малерб — не самое главное. Лишь бы это произведение было о войне, воспринимающее её за важное явление.

This book…tremendous. What started as a bit of a philosophical twist on trench memoirs turned into an utterly wrenching set of recollections. This one is going to haunt me for a long time.

Prix Goncourt 1917. Pas facile de passer après Barbusse. On sent que le roman s'inscrit dans le mouvement de remobilisation de 1917. Pas nul mais ça m'est totalement tombé des mains.
