From Sotweed to Suburbia: A History of the Crofton, Maryland Area, 1660s-1960s

Rate this book
The Rotary Club of Greater Crofton published the Revised Edition of Sotweed to Suburbia to support the restoration of the historic house and site at Linthicum Walks. Sotweed to Suburbia is a book for everyone who lives in or is curious about the Crofton area. Did you ever wonder:
What is sotweed?
Why Johns Hopkins Road has the same name as the famous hospital and university?
Why the bridge over the Patuxent River is named for priests?
Why there are Duvalls buried in the middle of Harrow Avenue?
What was Linthicum Walks or Darkness Converted into Light or Luggox of Snowden's Reputation Supported?
Where is the oldest house (1761)? The oldest school (1901)? The oldest church (1842)? The Old Post Road? Or the Drum Point Railroad?
How Crofton got its name?

The new edition brings the author, Dr. Joseph L. Browne, full circle to his first interest in Anne Arundel County history. His research in the early 1980s helped to convince county officials to preserve Linthicum Walks and nominate it to the National Register of Historic Places. As a teacher long interested in the history of small towns and rural areas, Browne encouraged students to investigate local historical sites. He has continued to write about Anne Arundel County history including Severn Parish and the county's first public schools. He currently directs a Washington exhibition project featuring a post-Civil War German-American architect, Adolf Cluss.
