George Finlayson accompanied John Crawfurd, the leader of the English East India Company mission to Siam and Vietnam in 1821-2, as surgeon and naturalist. His account of his travels, first published in 1826, is an interesting complement to Crawfurd's own writings (OUP, 1987). This new edition contains an introduction, providing the background to the period and to Finlayson himself, by one of Siam's leading historians.
