A young lady's body found by the river in York needs investigation, particularly as the finder is Detective Inspector Dave Smart. Is it a natural death or is foul play involved?

An initial post mortem reveals no obvious injuries so it looks as though there is nothing sinister. However, Smart feels otherwise and asks for a second opinion and that reveals that the girl had suffered a broken neck from a Karate chop.

Once identified it is revealed that the girl is a twin, whose brother has gone missing. She sets out to find him and in a series of flashbacks we learn how she gets into the situation where she ends up.

Smart and his colleagues find no obvious suspects but more and more digging reveals a sinister side to the affair. And while investigations are ongoing, Smart has the assistance of WPC Gladys (Jenny) Wren who he becomes attracted to.

The tension in the novel builds nicely as one of two despicable characters are encountered and the environs of York are fully explored as the investigation reaches a successful conclusion, while Smart and Wren find that they have more in common than they originally imagined!
