The single set is a living room back of a general store in Cayenne, in French Guiana. The climate is hot and humid. The room reflects the tropics, but the furniture has obviously been imported from France and bespeaks another world. An arch in the center of the back wall, hung with bamboo cur tains, opens into a corridor that leads into the shop. A bell rings when someone enters the shop and this can be heard in the living room. A double door in the upstage left wall leads to the family kitchen, and a door downstage of this leads to Other rooms in the house.

Very amusing play which was the basis for the Humphrey Bogart-Peter Ustinov-Aldo Ray film "We're No Angels" as well as a later remake with Sean Penn. Having seen the Bogart film first, and always having loved it, the slight differences between the stage version and the filmed version seemed to make the play a bit "thinner" in spots. But overall, a very entertaining and amusing play which takes place at Christmas in a rather unlikely setting - Devil's Island. The 3 angels of the title are convicts who escape from the island and hole up - temporarily they think - at the home and general store of a rather namby pamby man, his elegant wife, and their daughter. Surprisingly, the 3 spend more time solving the family's problems - in hilarious and wicked fashion - than they do plotting their escape from the island. Read the play and see the movie - but make sure it's the Bogart version - in either order!
I love the movie, We're No Angels. It's great to finally read the play that the movie is based on. It may not be out-right hilarious to some, but to me, this is just purely delightful. I would love to see it performed.
Very good! I picked this up because "We're No Angels" is one of my favorite films. The play version isn't as witty or funny as the movie, but an enjoyable read nonetheless.
