Romeo Alexander writes M/M romance out of Michigan, usually late at night, usually with coffee, always with one dog and two cats who couldn't care less about his deadlines.
He's a gay man writing what he knows: love that's messy before it's easy, men who need to be cracked open a little before they let someone in, and the kind of hurt/comfort that makes you want to reread the same chapter three times.
He believes in happy endings. He also believes they should cost something first.
Breaking the Law is a collaboration between Romeo Alexander and John Harris. As I have come to expect from John Harris this book is the first in a series. I was kind of hoping that with it being a collaboration that it would be a stand-alone book but nope not with the cliffhanger ending. So I found that to be a little disappointing. Don't get me wrong I like reading serials, but I prefer to read them when the series is complete, and I can binge read the whole series in one go. I did like the characters and storyline. Ry is leading a double life. A drug dealer by night and culinary student by day. He has just relocated from New Jersey and promised his mother that he isn't going to follow in his famous drug-dealing father, Martin Gamderella. Joey Courtland is a cop. He's new to the force, but he comes from a long and distinguished line of Courtland cops. The Courtlands are most known for keeping drugs out of their small town of Oakside, Connecticut. Joey and Ry meet at a local strip club, and sparks fly. Moreover, Ry sees an opportunity to use Joey as an in with the police to be able to keep track of any info into the drug trade. He didn't expect to start to fall for him. However, things get complicated when the cops capture one of his dealers and flip him. Now Ry is being blackmailed by the dirty cop for a cut of the profits. How will Ry get himself out of this mess? Moreover, will Joey stick with him after finding out that Ry had slept with the dirty cop twice while dating him? Your guess is as good as mine. I will just have to wait for the next book to find out. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

The idea that opposites attract is accepted, but when the law is on the line it makes things even more difficult. Ry never wanted to become a drug dealer, but after his father was killed he was the only one to step up to pay his father's debts and make sure his mother was taken care of. His move Oakside was the next step to take over until he could work his way out of the business. Joey finally gained his goal to. become a police officer, but after he started his job things were not what he had thought they would be. The two met one night at the local strip club and their attraction was mutually undeniable. Ry knew who his family was and even when he decided to use their friendship he began to have mixed feelings about it, something that had never happened before. Add a dangerous new drug into the mix and boys in blue who may not be all they seem leaving Joey to wonder where his loyalties lie.
This was a bang up fast paced story with surprises around every turn and it isn't over yet.
I wasn’t expecting that this book was supposed to be the first in a serial, and not a stand-alone, or the first in a series. The story isn’t complete with this book, just as a forewarning, even though it is much longer than your typical serial episode.
This was a very compelling narrative from the beginning. I loved that Joseph was both naive in his belief that his father’s conviction that the police were all honorable and yet he also recognized that his father saw things through rose-colored glasses. His is a strong believer in right vs. wrong, but he isn’t blind to the many shades of grey that exist between the two poles. In a similar way, I loved that Ry is an unapologetic drug dealer who cares about the well-being of his clients and is a truly good person.
This book has your typical tropes and character types, but combines them in an interesting and compelling way. It reflects people as they really are, and doesn’t rely on simple, one-dimensional characters. Both Joseph and Ry experienced growth during the course of this story as they begin to trust each other.
I am excited to read more of their story as it comes out.
This book is a hard one for me to review. I sincerely hate mobster, gangs, and drug crime books. I avoid them if possible. however this book was well-written and the characters were strong. Ry is a man who sells drugs to earn money to take care of him mom and he moved to Ct. to have a new start. But he had to buy equipment and pay for his cooking classes, then he also wants to save enough to open a restaurant. Joey is from a long line of policemen with his dad having cleaned their small town up of drug deals and crimes. Joey finally decides to become a policemen too and he meets Ry. They click. Ry decides though that Joey is the perfect person to get information from about what is going down in the town, especially when Joey lets slip about a new drug being introduced into circulation. Ry also haves sex with Nick another police officer to get info and he gets trapped into a blackmail scheme. Finding out about there being corrupted police on the force and Ry's drug dealing ways shakes Joey to his core. Now we have to wait for the next in the series to find out how Ry's will redeem himself. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book.
I've read all John Harris has written so decided to give this book a read. John Harris and Romeo Alexander did a great job with this book I only hope this is the first book so that you can follow Ry and Joey to see where this takes them. Joey is a genuinely good guy who has followed in his father's footsteps and become a cop. The legacy that his father has left in the department can be a little difficult at times. Ry is also following in his father's footsteps and selling drugs just like his father did. Ry however wants to cook and is attending culinary school. Even though Ry is prepared to do everything he can to not get caught you can't help but like him. As I said I hope there is a second book because I'd love to see where these characters go from here. The plot is well thought out and interesting. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.
Alright. What the hell! First of all there was a part about it being ten days later and then going to a concert that contradicted stuff a couple pages later about them only meeting the night before. That bugged me so much and when the concert was brought up again near the end, it really pissed me off that so many people likely read and edited but didn’t catch that. Also the ending... again what the hell. Joey basically just forgives him for everything. If he was really the good cop he made himself out to be, he would not have folded so quickly. Also, it ends with Nick blackmailing Ry and Joey promising not to stop it. Worst cliffhanger. As you can tell I am not a fan of this book.
I was prepared to rate this as a 4 until the cliff-hanger type ending, which knocked it down to a 3. But although several other reviews seem to indicate this is the first of a series, it does not appear to be so (not marked as part of a series on either GR or Amazon, and it was published in 2017, and it's now almost 2023, and I see no indication of a follow-up). That ending was not satisfying at all. So many threads still ongoing, and nothing whatsoever wrapped up at all. Thus, the 2 stars
this was good.. i will admit i wasn't expecting it to be a seriel novella type of story.. but it is a longer story so i guess not novella.. it is a kind of cliffhanger though in ways.. that doesnt bother me so not a biggie for me lol.. i enjoyed this.. the characters are very interesting.. good cop... bad criminal.. but they love... and they love hard.. and its sexy and sweet and im glad i got to review it
MM. Joseph has some issues with following in the footsteps of his family, as a police officer. Not everything happening at the police force is what Joseph first thinks. Ry is a dedicated criminal and sees Joseph as naive and a potential way in to the force. The story has some cheating and ends abruptly. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
A good story that is well written and developed. It flows smoothly and kept me hooked throughout. It's a good boy/bad boy pairing of Joey, the cop, and Ry, crime syndicate boss. They have an instant attraction and incredible chemistry. Can their relationship survive the lies and deception. Can't wait for the next part. There wasn't one note on Amazon or Goodreads that let a reader know that the "unapologetic drug dealer" hooked up with another cop while he was pining for "his cop". I don't like cheating books even if there is a reason for it.. Yeah, ok.. I am sure that men look at relationships differently then women but still..
This book was a let down of massive proportions. First one of the main guys cheats and second nothing is resolved but then the book just ends. That is just horrible and not a great story at all. I enjoyed the other two books i have read by this author but not this one.
This story kept my attention through out. Ry and Joey following in their fathers' foot steps, while trying to be their own persons. Love can hit you without you realizing it. I get to wonder where will they go from here?
I am looking forward to seeing what happens with these characters. Joey, son of the town's cop, will he be able to take on the local police . will he be able to forgive the man he loves.
What do you do when you fall for someone on the other side of the law. It's a slippery slope. I'm hoping there will be another book. There is more to Ry and Joey.
