About the author

The son of a U.S. naval officer, Edwin T. Layton, Jr. was president of the Society for the History of Technology and a professor of the history of science and technology at the University of Minnesota from 1975 until his retirement in 1998. He earned his BA (1950), MA (1953), and Ph.D. (1956) in history from the University of California at Los Angeles.
