I read most of this book about one of my favorite poets but the only thing that really interested me was the biographical info. I learned quite a bit in the first two sections and once the book started discussing poetry analysis, I started to skim it. The writing, in the almost opposite way of O'Hara, is dry and academic.
I set out to read The Collected Poems of Frank O'Hara this year. I will not be succeeding in that task, with five hundred pages left before the end of the year. But this biography and analysis of his work is absolutely wonderful. I look forward reading it again after diving more thoroughly into O'Hara's work. It is academic and sometimes dry, yes, but it is also often stirring and truly insightful. And even more, it made me want to write some goddamn poetry.
