Kenneth was a gifted communicator, courageous leader, and visionary. He was a talented writer and innovative educator. He served as pastor of South Main Baptist Church in Houston, Texas and Walnut Street Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. He was a professor of evangelism and preaching at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary where he earned a doctor of Theology degree and later served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was a professor of evangelism and preaching at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

He also served as Director of Evangelism of the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention and Dean of the Billy Graham Schools of Evangelism. At the time of his death he was Pastor Emeritus of South Main Baptist Church. He was on the organizing board for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and in 1998 received the Baptist Courage Award from the Whittsit Baptist Heritage Society. The Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond established the Kenneth Chafin Chair of Preaching in his honor.

He was an active participant on many boards in Texas and Kentucky. In his final years, he planned and presided over an annual Pastor's Conference at Georgetown College in Kentucky. He authored six books dealing with the laity, witnessing, the successful life and the family and wrote devotionals for The Daily Guidepost books. In his last decade he also developed a passion for reading and writing poetry.

Dr. Chafin was the professor of my evangelism class. I enjoyed the book and him as a professor. He was an adjunctive prof. at BTSR in 1996.
