Even on his birthday, King Basil was sad. He was a good king, and his subjects wanted him to be happy. How about a surprise? Three children, Richard, Alison, and Jennifer, appeared, along with their imaginary friend, Googie. King Basil was not amused and sent for the Birthday Fairy to take the children and their friend back. However, as the fairy had gone, Basil would have to be with the children for a whole year until his next birthday. Most embarrassing for Basil was when he was an hour late to the Royal Ball because he had to take care of the children. And his next birthday was still six months away! Turning the ball into a birthday party, with games and decorations did not fool the Birthday Fairy. An even greater embarrassment came when Basil was supposed to meet with neighboring kings and sign a treaty and Basil was told to cup his hands to hold Googie. Basil's birthday finally came, and along came the queen. Then came the true birthday surprise!
