Very delightful insight into household items from the foregone century! De Haan writes with wit and humor, indulging us in the delights of everyday items and their usage in the past. Electrical hairbrushes, riding machines for exercise, reading helps, beautiful ovens, vacuum cleaner cars, the first lawnmower, electrical water bottles, stoves, heating devices - you name it! The book is filled with a total of 250 illustrations, taken directly from old catalogues, including descriptions. It was SUCH a delight to read this tiny little book and get an insight how it must have been to live in a (upper o.) middle class household back in the days. Very helpful and entertaining research material, too, if you are working in film (with period dramas) like I do.
